I would at least opt to put some patterned shams into that mix(less expensive than buying larger pieces with pattern). I like pattern and that is way.too.neutral for my tastes, personally.

Bright colored throw and patterned pillow shams. The pieces are super basic. I wouldn't think of it as a mistake just building blocks for the perfect look.
If you hate it, return it. When I picked up a badly designed bedding on sale, I found I couldn't sleep well on it. It was a comforter. I swear it was a different color in the store, when I got it home. It was a closeout sale so I couldn't return it. I ended up donating it because I hated it so much.
I've learned not to throw good money after bad . If you can't return it and you don't have a guest room to use it in, then I think you've got to consider the cost sunk. Get something you like - but first try your hand returning it. Maybe thy won't take sheets back, but the duvet and shams might be returnable
I sold used (but freshly washed!) Pottery Barn duvet + shams on my local Craigslist. I actually had lots of people ask about it. Took maybe a month to find someone who wanted to pay my asking price.
