I'm not anywhere near my mid life crisis (hopefully) but when I feel like life has gotten stagnant I'll start a project, change my hair or volunteer somewhere new. We don't have much extra money right now so things like taking trips are out of the question. But having something to do with my time helps more than anything.
Makeover! You should get some highlights and get a drastic haircut. I have no idea what you look like but whenever I need a change the hair is the fist thing on the list.

Travel, go hiking, try a new sport (especially a team sport), try something you always wanted to do but didn't for lots of reasons--it's likely to become a new passion, and something that could very easily become a way to refocus mid-life

I've signed up for a few different classes when I was in a rut: watercolors, cheese making, drawing. If there is something you've been curious about or interested in doing, it can be fun. The ones at my local arts center weren't horribly expensive either.
Spring is around the corner and, in my area, that means lots of outdoor events and festivals. A couple of years ago I decided to find one free thing to do every weekend for 3 months during the summer. I found a lot of cool stuff: concerts, tours of homes, free pass day at the local art museum, art festivals, etc. I went even if I couldn't find someone to go with me. It ended up being lots of fun and I discovered new, cool stuff in my city.

I agree with taking a trip by yourself, whether it's large or small.
Pursue a hobby you've always been interested in but never took up.
If you're up for something adventurous, go sky diving/bungee jumping/zip lining depending what is near you. Or combine one of these with the solo vacation
Start running! It's seriously the best thing I ever did for myself.
DH and are midlife. He started running a few months ago. I started a workout program (I NEVER worked out before. EVER). We both feel so much better. I was becoming a total couch potato. I'm still one, but a tad healthier one.
Oh, and I started a grad school program.
Yay midlife!! I didn't really see it as that at the time, but that's a part of it. W/o question.
Whenever I feel like I need to step outside of my comfort zone, I just start signing up for shit. This week I've done a 5k and signed up for power lifting classes. Tomorrow is my first class.
