How the hell did I do over 1000 hours of pumping for kid 1?
I'm sure if I *had* to do it this time around as well, I would (6 months was my goal were that the case). But thank goodness he can latch. It's a million times easier than pumping.
I try to pump now to have milk on hand. I was doing it consistently for awhile but this past wrk have barely done it and that's not good on the freezer stash. I need to suck it up and do it in The am when I have more supply, but I keep procrastinating.
Today I was so excited to feed misotiny a whopping 40cc of breastmilk, which was result of three laborious pumping sessions.
Then she threw it up all over herself and me.
And then we both cried.
Oh, this is the worst.
I pumped for several days a few weeks ago so that I could go to a doctor's appointment alone - and Target afterwards- and then I SPILLED 9 oz of milk when making the bottles for h that day. I sobbed. And then took both babies to the dr with me and skipped Target.

Yeah, it is miserable. I'm going to start working in about 2 weeks and I don't think I'm even going to try and pump. She's over 6 months and EBF until now so whatever. It is just so unpleasant.

I am not looking forward to pumping when I go back to work. It's hard enough pumping one session a day. I have almost 400 ozs in my freezer now, but I know that isn't good enough for my hope to get to a year.
Yup, it was ever 4 hours for 9 months, plus every 2 hours for the first 3 months.
@misoangry You will get more volume and a rhythm. But I totally understand how precious it is. And that would make me cry, too.
Even when I had excess after months of and could donate, god forbid anyone wasted it. It was too much work to waste.
Now I'm even more protective of it. Dh is more casual about not wasting any of it because he was used to excess. Now I'm like "for the love of god, put it back in the fridge!!!!"
The soundtrack to my nightmares is the noise my pump made.
I'm convinced it was saying "more milk" and had my husband come into listen to it several times. I'm sure he thought I had postpartum psychosis or something.
It's seriously the soundtrack to alllll of kid 1 videos we made of her!
SHe had a dance for the pump noise - I had to pump the first 2 weeks of this kid's life until he could latch. Dd would dance to the beat. "You pump, mommy?"
Miso- I'm sorry that happened I remember during my lowest milk supply period where I pumped like 2 oz (this was from like 5 pumping sessions) and OMG I was so proud. Then the dog knocked it over. I cried and cried.
My pumping time was "me" time, so I didn't hate it. But yes, pumping itself sucks.
I did have more online time then. (Half awake) and it kind of felt like "me" time but now that I don't have to race to pump every single 3.5 hour mark, I realize there could be such a thing as me time that diff involve my boobs at all.
I thought that was the only thing I slightly missed but nope, I was wrong. I don't miss that. (Pumping, if you couldn't tell)
It is odd though, because I can't get nearly as much milk from pumping as I used to.
Pumping sucks because I just want to go to bed, but she's already eaten and I have no freezer stash and she hates formula, so I have to sit here and do it. I hate being beholden to a machine, though I love breastfeeding.
Please note that 40cc is only about 1.3 oz. That is three sessions for both boobs.
Hmm. Are you pumping once ea day?
Your supply is naturally biggest in the am. I get the most if I pump after I feed kiddo. Feed one side, pump the other. Some ppl claim talent to do that at the same time but I can't.
I can't get nearly as much milk if I do not use a hands free bra. For some reason it's better at keeping the flanges at the right angle than I was. Simple wishes is the brand I like.
If you're like me at that point, yelling kid and managing chaos is still a bit Overwhelming, this may be hard, but I would recommend pumping once a day if you can so you can start getting a stash (& making it a regular chore for yourself - depending on when you're going back)
Oatmeal helps. Guinness helps. There are recipes for lactation cookies that help supply if you feel you need it. I can give you recipe.
I think I remember reading it's a good idea to introduce a bottle around 6 weeks. And that's just to give her the idea and you've started that.
Feel free to let me know if you need pump advice. Some lactation ppl contact me to ask questions about pump stuff haha after they realized how much I had done it.

I pump six times a day. The 40cc was the total result of THREE times for BOTH boobs. I have a hands-free bra. She does not nurse There is no actual breastfeeding here. She is bottle-fed exclusively.
None of that so-called eat-this-for-lactation shit works. I'm sorry to be so crass, but I'm sick of people giving me these "tips."
How the hell do you get a stash from pumping once a day?
@misoangry What time of day are you doing it? My supply was low with kid one for first month or 2. Not low, just appropriate for what she ate. But t felt like I pumped nothing and I used the skinny tiny 80 ml bottles and didn't have a lot in there. Dh and I would be amazed when I'd get more. Then all of a sudden, I needed to switch to the bigger 150 ml bottles. I find w this kid, my supply came in quicker but since I'm nursing as well, I get less milk when pumping.
Oh, and perhaps frkls can change this if I'm inaccurate, but I was kind of worries about pumping all the milk out and then baby needing to feed. LC at the hospital told me that you really can't pump it all out. I find sometimes he has to work a little harder if he's hungry super soon after I pumped but there's still milk.
Also, what amount of time are you doing? I do 20 min. When I first started w kid 1, I did 10 min at a time.
I hope you're hanging in decently. Those first few months are like a crazy upside down world. I had many times crying. Esp when I couldn't stop her crying.
Anyway. I better go to bed. Kid will be up to eat soon and I haven't slept yet. Please let me know if you have questions or you can on me if you want as well. I know there are tons of great resources here as well though. Everyone can talk about your milk and boobs if you like.
She's seriously adorable. I love when I'm on and catch a pic.
@misoangry have you talked to your OB about this? They can prescribe medications to up your supply too. They have side effects, though.
Here's a link about PCOS and BFing. But, because you hadn't heard of it, it is likely not an issue. About 4 weeks out I was pumping about 3-5oz a day total. It took awhile for me to react to the pump. I also really recommend rending a Medela Symphony. It makes a huge difference.
ETA: I am also a person who had to pump 30 mins. Every time. I'd sometimes have to pump 45. I had really slow boobs. It sucked. I got really good at pumping on my commutes to cut down on pumping during the day.
Miso, I am impressed you've continued on. I would cry and cry and have cried and cried at spit up or spilled breastmilk. The little jerks have no appreciation for the effort involved.

With DS1, I was obsessed with having a freezer stash. I only worked part time, so he only got one bottle a day. I felt like I NEEDED a stash..."just in case". I ended up having tons left when he hit one year and wasn't aware of how I could donate it at that point.
This time, I'm not doing it. I'm a SAHM. I pump only for my comfort, times I'm gone, or making his food. If my supply tanks and I have to switch to formula, then that's what I'll do. I pump for his needs now, I'm not worrying about some unknown future this time.
I have so much respect for moms who EP. It's pretty amazing what some moms are willing to do for their kids!

When I was pumping in the first month I'd only get a 1/2 oz from one or both boobs, pumping 30 min. It gradually went up. I EP now and get 2-3.5oz a boob 4x a day. If you keep pumping it may increase, but it may not.
Don't feel bad about stopping if you're just getting frustrated. It's not "quitting" if you stop, truly. Do what keeps you sane.
