but not just any fountain but a 5 foot tall castle fountain that will have flames coming out to go in a little courtyard area in front of the dining room window.
WTH?
A fountain would be nice but flames? In the shape of a castle? And he is talking about running a gas line through the foundation to get to this fancy castle flame fountain.
I think I am going to have to talk him down and into something less ambitious.
He is all about planning outdoor projects right now since the snow and ice and cold is making him stir crazy.
UPDATE: He is totally serious. He has drawings and everything. He was doing google searches on bricks last night at one point.
If all goes according to his plan, the fire fountain will look a bit like a chess rook. The flames will come out of the top and the water will spill over the sides.
This is about 5 feet from the house. I am not amused and think it is a bad idea. My new plan is to keep him too busy working on other outdoor projects (like the fence around the garden, building more garden boxes, fixing up the yard) that he won't have time to actually build this thing.
Here is my rendering of the drawing he showed me last night.
If you called his bluff and said it was great - would he actually do it?
I had an great uncle that built all kinds of stone stuff in their backyard. He built a huge stone pond, had an island in the middle, stone walls. He built a stone bridge to his island. He had a stone lighthouse on the island and the lights worked, they were red & green. I think the neighbors loved it, I'm just sure they did. The lighthouse was about 6' tall and probably 6' around at the base.
I'm trying to think what other stone structures he built. I was always fascinated by the water, the bridge, the lighthouse and really didn't pay attention to anything else but they had lots of stuff. Maybe a tiny (well 4x8 around) church with steeple, lights and ringing bell. I can't rembember the rest.
Sounds like something my dad would come up with. Thankfully, he has ADHD, so his crazy ideas never last long before they're replaced by the next one.
Flames? How close to the house? What about wind?
I'm not a fan of fountains at my own house. Ours was a pain to keep looking nice. It was too close to shrubs, so we constantly had to fish leaves out of it. We tore it out & vowed to never have another fountain.

This sounds awesome. I would totally do something like that in backyard. Probably no castle though, I would try and recreate the bellagio fountains and incorporate flames. I don't think my neighbors or the HOA would support this endeavor.
I have learned that it is better to let DH figure out on his own that his ideas are bad ones versus my telling him they are.
So at this point, since nothing has been purchased and he is still "planning" things, I am letting him run with the idea. And as an added back up plan, if it takes a bit longer to sink in that this is a bad idea, I have lots of other outdoor projects I need his help with before he can start on this pet project.
Do you have any HOA, town or other ordinances that would prohibit such a thing?
Nope.
And TBH, I don't think this will ever get built. But the seriousness with which DH talks about it is a bit crazy.
This was his inspiration photo. He found it online and was all "this is awesome!" But apparently it is too short and so just buying it doesn't work for him (thank goodness since then it would really happen.)
That drawing is hysterical. If DH ever wanted to build something like that in our yard I guess I'd be down because it would mean I could build the ridiculous garden shed I want for the back yard.
