Just came from the OB - I'm 3cm and he did the stretch and sweep. HOLY shit that hurts. I'm bleeding quite a bit now and he is hopeful something will happen in the next 48 hours. If not, I have to go back on Thursday and he will break my waters and get me going (why? - does anyone know).
Update Thursday - just got back from the OBs office. (I'm 40w3d). I'm 4cm but he is going to let me wait until Monday (41w) and then I will be induced if nothing has happened by then. I'm really relieved I didn't have to discuss getting induced today with him.
3cm is good. And the sweep should hopefully help. I know it did help me with DS. Although he did take a week to come after my sweep, but it helped me loose my mucous plug that day. How overdue are you though? Why is he wanting to break your waters?
Edit: Meant to say that breaking your waters can kick start your labour, but I thought most doctors went the induction route first and will break your waters during induction. I could be very wrong though.
Breaking your water forces baby down on your cervix, which is supposed to help dilate quicker but it is definitely not something you have to have done if you dont want to. It can also slow down labor in some women. Hopefully things get started on their own before your appt on Thursday!
I'd be hesitant to get my water broken unless it really had to be done. My midwife (and I've read this other places, too) says it introduces bacteria despite clean instruments and gloves, and can lead to infection risk, which may set the stage for other interventions to hurry labor along or at least requiring antibiotics. Since you aren't much past your due date, I would not want my water broken, personally. But I lean toward fewer unnecessary interventions and figure that generally the baby will come when he is ready.

Thanks. I just updated my OP, thankfully he is going to let me go until Monday which I am a lot more comfortable with.
I hope things get rolling over the weekend - so glad your doc was willing to give you a timeline you are comfortable with! My fingers are crossed for you!
