Went in for my regular monthly prenatal visit, and I'm up 20 pounds at 25 weeks. I'm very aware of how much weight I've gained, and not real happy about it, but I was hoping to get by with at least one more appointment before my weight came up. She didn't lecture me at all, just mentioned that the normal weight gain is 25-30 pounds, so I'm almost there. I told her I'd been having trouble with eating and she said to try and reign in the carbs a little. I'm not upset at what she said, I expected it to come up, just hate having to face the next 15 weeks with trying to control my weight gain as much as possible with healthier diet and exercise (and who knows what I'll be eating if I test positive for GD in a few weeks).
Sorry! I dunno your whole situation, but there is only so much you can do. I gained 50lbs my first pg and will probably hit that # on the scale again. I know perfectly healthy women who gained 60 or more and were fine too. Obviously everyone can "eat healthier" but really, it's not like she can expect you to only gain 5 more pounds.
According to all of the tables, I was supposed to aim for a 15-25 pound weight gain. I've gained 40 pounds, and still have 5 weeks to go, so will probably be up 45-50 pounds by the end. My midwife doesn't seem too bothered by it, but has reminded me that the more I gain, the more I'll have to lose.
I am curious to know from the STM+ crowd, how much less did you weigh after the baby was born? I mean, if the baby is 8-ish pounds, a little more for the placenta…about how much less can I expect to weigh when I leave the hospital vs. when I go in? I'm probably gonna hit 200 pounds by the time I hit full term, and would like to get back down to 150 eventually….trying to figure out how much I'm going to have to lose.

I'm up 19 pounds at 23 weeks and so far none of the doctors I have seen have mentioned anything...the online calculator I just did said I should gain 25-35 lbs. I do feel like I'm getting huge, but it just seems to be belly and boobs, and maybe a bit of swelling.

My BMI said I was borderline obese when I got pg, so technically the "charts" say I should gain 11-20 pounds. My ob still said to aim for the 25-35 pound range and focus on lean proteins and fruits and veggies. At 22 weeks, I am up 26 pounds. They say you gain a pound a week at this point, so if I do that, I'd be up 32 pounds total on the date the c-section is scheduled for at 39 weeks. I ask my doctor about it at every appointment because I gained 50 with ds and don't want to do that again. She isn't concerned with my gain at this point so I try not to worry about it.
To answer @villianv - They say to expect to be about what you were at 6 months pg when you leave the hospital. That was pretty accurate for me last time.
I'm a chubby lover over here, but 20 pounds in 25 weeks seems pretty good -- and totally normal -- to me. I think my doctor said to aim for a max of 35 pounds, as opposed to 30. But most of the women I know gained much more than that. My sister gained 56 and a teeny tiny friend gained 50+ as well. I am going into this hoping I don't go above 40. I exercise 4-5 times a week, walk a ton and eat healthily on week days. I treat myself on weekends and I probably could rein that in a bit, but whatever, man.
Another reason this annoys me is because its NOT fat weight. Often times its water. All your organs, blood, and many other parts become engorged with fluid. Your blood supply increases by 50%. I've known post partum women who would lose 10lbs in a week due finally being able to lose water weigh. Plus your uterus is growing - not just stretching, but literally growing. There is a lot of energy needs that drive our cravings and bigger portions.
For me I lost about half of my pg weight after 2 weeks post partum, and then about 10 or so lbs over the next few months. I nursed DD, so my body didn't want to lose weight while doing that and held onto water (which is what its supposed to do) to make milk for the baby. So I really couldn't diet in a real way until after I stopped nursing her FT.

So many different things affect post-partum weight loss, not just diet and exercise. Some women find that the pounds slide off with breast feeding while others find that a certain amount of weight stubbornly remains until the child is weaned. All this to say that I can only tell you what happened with me and I have no idea if this will be the case again.
I gained 40 lbs. when I was pregnant with DD. DD was almost 8 lbs at birth and I lost a fair amount of weight almost immediately. I couldn't tell you the exact amount I weighed when I left the hospital, but I wasn't wearing maternity pants/clothes anymore within 2 weeks. Within a year, I was down 50 lbs. total, so 10 lbs. less than my pre-pregnancy weight.
I was nursing DD and I went to yoga and pilates semi-regularly (more regularly after DD was sleeping longer stretches and I had more energy). I didn't eat all that differently than I ate while pregnant, however. It was generally healthy overall, but I was still pretty hungry while I was nursing, as hungry as I was while pregnant. Yet I just kept losing weight. This is why comments about "not watching your diet" regarding weight gain drive me crazy. There is so much more that effects your metabolism.

I was 175 before I got pregnant the first time. I was at about 210 by the time I had my baby. My baby was only 4 lbs. I did not try purposely to loose weight, no dieting, no exercise. I did BF and I hit 160 before I went back to work at 12 wks.
I am up 22 lbs now and I am 23 wks along. I have already gotten the weight talk but I am not really caring as I have no prob shedding the weight.

This is great info - thank you! I like having a rough estimate of what you should weigh when leaving the hospital. And I forgot when the pound a week gain started.
By that math I'll be up 35lbs total but back to roughly where I am right now when discharged.

I had a bunch of fluids, so when I left the hospital I only weighed 4 lbs less than when I went in. Baby was 5 lbs. :/ Then two weeks later I dropped 10 pounds overnight. By my 6wk appt I was within 2 lbs of pre preg weight.

with my last pregnancy (3 yrs ago), I was 150 when I got pregnant, 220 by the time I delivered (thanks to a LOT of takeout), and around 210/205 when we left the hospital. through the magical power of not doing jack squat in the way of exercising or eating right, I was still 180 1 yr after DD was born. Then I lost 20 lbs, and put back on 10. I hover around 170 now, but I'm pregnant again so I'll be gaining more.

I gained between 35-40 with my first, and lost about half of it in the hospital. DS was 11 lbs so that helped! I obsessed over my weight gain so much last time; I'm trying to pay less attention this time around.

I know as soon as I get the all-clear I'll be back on WW tracking points, plus it will be so much easier to eat healthy in the summer, it's just been hard for my brain this winter to get in the "eat as healthy as possible" mode that I know it should be in. I've been in a weight loss/maintenance/eating healthy mode for so many years and hardly ever allowed myself to eat what I wanted if I wanted it that I've been enjoying the freedom to eat things when I want them during this pregnancy. I still don't think I've been eating horrendously, just more carbs than usual which makes me gain weight like crazy. I know that pregnancy isn't a reason to eat whatever you want whenever you want it, but I have definitely been allowing myself to eat "forbidden" things more often during pregnancy than I would before.
I am to the point where I can barely eat a whole portion of anything except for breakfast because I get full so quickly, so I'm hoping that with portion control and somewhat healthier eating my weight doesn't skyrocket.
We have the same due date. But I am up 30 pounds. My doctor didn't say anything. I swear it is all in my belly and my boobs are at least twice as big. I tracked my free - eating for a week and I average about 2100 calories net, which is perfect because I was at about 1800 per day pre pg. So I reviewed the quality of my foods and they aren't so bad. Some snacks could be better choices, but overall I am doing quite well. There isn't a lot I can change, and there is no way in hell I can manage to eat less. I do think a lot is bloat. Plus I definitely take in more fluids than I put out!
I am going to try to make better choices with my snacks, and make sure I'm not just eating for comfort. I am also going to focus on exercise. I've done almost none because I've felt so blech, but I am feeling better so I will join h on the dog walks etc.
I hope my 30 pounds makes you feel better!
thanks for sharing! i am convinced that at least 5 pounds of weight gain is in my boobs - they aren't that much bigger - up from a DD to a DDD - but they feel so much heavier it's crazy.
I'm up 20lbs at 20 weeks. I've definitely put some body fat on but I've also been paying zero attention to my diet. I have to be very careful with what I eat to not gain weight normally and, well, I haven't been. I gained 40lbs with my last pregnancy and will probably end up the same this time. I don't know what I weighed when I left the hospital but I remember weighing myself every morning after we got home and it wasn't unusual to lose 5lbs or more overnight at first. Most of it came off pretty quickly.

This is EXACTLY how I feel, right down to going on WW when I can after the birth.
I normally feel best and lose weight the most while eating low-carb, but that has gone out the window during pregnant.

Trying to keep your pregnancy weight gain to within a 10 pound window is a complete load of crock. I gained 46 by the time A was born at 38 weeks and I still have 17 of them at 3 months PP. Eat healthy. Drink lots of water. Take your vitamins. Ditch the scale and don't let it stress you out.

as a STM mom, I weighed about the same leaving the hospital as I did when I went in. They pump you full of fluids, there's still a lot of swelling and your boobs weigh about 20lbs each. It took about a week for the night sweats to come in and that's when the weight loss started for me. FWIW, I had PPD after my 1st and gained weight after she was born (and wasn't able to nurse.) Then after my second, I lost 45lbs from my highest weight due to a combo of nursing and starting WW at about four months PP. That 45lbs came off within about nine months of her birth.
