We went house shopping (again) this weekend. And looked at 5 houses, two of which were just dripping with possibilities.
And I managed to find fault with both of them. Even the flip priced 100k lower than our budget would comfortably allow.
So H and I discussed it last night over dinner, and came to the conclusion that we're looking at houses just for teh sake of looking and because it feels like something we should be doing, instead of something we want to be doing. So we're going to stop looking for a while. If something awesome falls into our lap, we'll hop on it. But otherwise, we're going to just stay here in the cottage and make some inexpensive renovations to it to make it worthwhile in the longer term (new flooring, new paint, etc).
It's a hard decision to make, but I'm glad we've come to one ... looking at all these nice houses and then finding fault with them (especially very PICKY fault) makes me sort of depressed.

We've put our search on hold because we don't have a contract and we find one we like well enough. I mean, my H loves it, but I am not completely sold.

fia - we're going on hold indefinitely. We wanted to be in a house this year because the money we're putting into our rental (especially considering the size) is not really financially prudent. The good houses in our market are moving quickly, but even those we'd be compromising a little too much to make it worthwhile. I think we'd just rather get in a better financial place and then maybe do a custom build.
Sounds like a well thought out plan. I hear you, house shopping can be really depressing especially if inventory is low or you're in a HCOL area. We came pretty close to pulling the plug a few times.
