Would you be willing to not have him go on the trip? If not, I wouldn't play dumb. Sometimes changing it is a problem and sometimes it's not. I wouldn't risk it, personally.
I would call the airline asap. It has been a pain in the arse when the airline insists the ticket must be issued in my maiden name because my visa is (special circumstance for a country that doesn't recognize names acquired through marriage), even though both my married and maiden names appear on my passport. I get everything triple-documented to avoid issues at the airport and I still end up having to check in earlier, etc.

FYI - A number of airlines are willing to wave the name change fee if it was a clerical mistake like a slight misspelling. I think if you explain that the booking form got filled out wrong there's a good chance they'll be accommodating.

I've run into this with my boss when his wife made his travel arrangements. She was always getting his names in the wrong order. It didn't help that his first name was a fairly common last name. Southwest was really easy about it and had no problems. I've had varying degrees of success with other airlines, though all eventually allowed the change without a fee, but for a few he did have to check-in in person and provide 2 forms of ID.
