I think I'm going to attempt to find jeans today, god help me. I'm guessing straight leg, right? I'm average height, size 14, big chest, big hips/butt.
I'm a 14 with big hips and I bought jeans from Nordstrom Rack yesterday. They were Democracy Jeans (never heard of them but I know nothing about fashion) and the style was barely boot. They fit kind of like skinny jeans and then they flare out just a tiny bit at the bottom. They are stretchy and comfortable and I'm in love with them.
Shopping for jeans sucks! Seriously try on all kinds of styles - keep an open mind. Get whatever is comfortable and makes you feel great. These days, so many styles are in. A bit of stretch/lycra in the fabric does wonders.
One tip I always remember from What Not to Wear is to pay attention to back pocket shape and position. If you want to minimize a bigger butt area and make it look perky, go for pockets that aren't too big or too small and are placed near the middle of your butt cheeks. If the pockets are too small, it makes the butt look bigger. If they are too far apart, the make the butt look wider.
One other thing to keep in mind, if you find a pair that you love but don't fit perfect, you can get alterations. For example, I have my favorite pair of jeans that fit perfectly every where except I get the gap at my back. $20 for alterations and they fit exactly how I want.
