I currently have a municiple job that pays well and has good benefits. I am not happy for a variety of reasons. My boss is a terrible manager, I am doing the work of 2 people, and it is not in my field. Today, I was offered a job as an executive director of a non-profit. This is everything I ever wanted. Unfortunately , it is $5k less pay than my current position. My son will enter kindergarten in the fall. Chilcare expense is crippling, but the end is near.
I do not want to tank my family financially, but the thought of staying in my current position makes me want to die. What would you do?
I ink you have to write out a budget. If you can make the numbers work even if it means cutting back a little and your H is on board then do it. You spend most of your waking hours at your job and if it's feasible you should not be miserable.

They originally stated that the salary was in the low forties. They offered $50k and cannot go higher. I will sit down with my husband to discuss our budget.
First, try to negotiate with the second job. Even if they meet you half way, that's a big step!
Take a close look at your budget. If you don't have one, make one now. See wheee you can cut corners. Consider going on a spending freeze for a month, buy only what is necessary & eat from your pantry. Meal plan based on grocery sales & do meatless meals a few times a week. Post on MM if you need help. They're very helpful.
It's <$400 difference in take home pay. You may (or may not) be surprised at how you could save that money, especially if it's short term.
Personally, I would not stay in a job I hate for $5K a year.
Also consider salary projections, though. Raises and bonuses may not increase as quickly at a non-profit as your current job. When you drop daycare costs, you'll be adding other costs, so you can't count on pocketing all of that daycare money. After school care, lunches, sports/activities, birthday parties, etc. all add up quickly.
I am a nonprofit director and am ready to move up and have contemplated taking a lower- paying ED job if one comes along. It depends on your career goals, though. Do you want to be a CEO/ED? If so, then take it. If not, you may be surprised by how thankless a job it is.
I can't imagine giving up a job you're truly excited about over $5k. I would do everything I could to work the budget. Drop cable, no eating out, try to lower your cell phone bill, etc. You're almost there with being done paying for child care. It just doesn't seem worth it to let it go when you're seemingly going to be alright financially in just a few months.

Thank you for the input! I am looking at our ways to cut and we can do this. It will be tight, but only in the short term. I am so excited for this opportunity!
