The one guy, Chuck, really bugs me though. His wife is very supportive and when it was her turn to get weight loss surgery he was sitting on the couch and genuinely stunned that she wanted him to "make a special trip" to go fill her pain medicine rx.
Then he cried like a baby when she finally left. It was all about him: "I won't have insurance to get my skin removed!!!" etc.
I've seen several weight loss surgery shows. It fascinates me but yes, they are often very sad. I've seen a couple where it just ends up being too much for their heart and they die. Many others (including a close friend of mine) result in serious addictions to alcohol and/or drugs. Substituting one addiction for another I suppose.
I watched one episode (last year?) when the show premiered. I couldn't watch any more after that. Too sad. I am glad they're getting help though. It won't be easy and it isn't a miracle cure but it is better than being 600+ lbs.
I was annoyed with Chuck the whole time, but he was a weight loss success, so I'm happy about that. It make me so sad and mad when they go through the surgery and then don't lose any weight. And then there was that one woman who used her kid as a pawn so she wouldn't have to stick to the diet.
I do enjoy that show even though it is sad. Some people totally turn their lives around. I think Dr.Naw is a total saint for dealing with people who lie straight to his face.

How is this even possible?
People not losing weight after surgery? They don't follow the prescribed diet. They just keep eating even beyond what is safe for their new stomach size.
I saw one where the husband was caught chatting with other women online making arrangements to meet for sex. Before and years after surgery. She said he even made plans the day of her surgery while she was recovering and 6 years post surgery when their daughter was 2 months old. But according to him it wasn't so bad because he never went through with it. Asshole. He was all supportive until about 3 years post op. He would say things like 'one cake won't hurt' 'just a little bit of chips' ect. And you could tell he was so disengaged because he gained about 50 lbs himself. It was so sad.
I do like seeing the people make positive changes and get their lives back. But it can be a hard show to watched. Many of them have been through a lot in their past and its amazing to see how little support they have in their lives from their families.

Still, very sad stuff.
I was watching that last night. He pissed me off so bad. He was such a jerk and I was all "GOOD FOR HER" when she left him and was so strong. But he came around in the end. And I noticed him he kept saying "I love you I love you" and she wouldn't say it back. did you watch the one after with the 700 lb 22 year old girl. that one made me so sad. Her whole family enabled her and she couldn't even move. So sad

This happened to my friend. She lost over 100lbs with gastric bypass. She then became an alcoholic. She has since gotten sober and now has gained almost all her weight back. she is going in for another redo of her surgery
I watch the show, mainly bc I know the Dr. IRL and it's fun to see someone you know on tv. It always fascinates me to see the family dynamics and how often you can tell that SOMEONE isn't supportive/happy for the patient.

You know him? How?
I think he's presh. I want to pat him on the head. This is weird and probably flameful.

Chuck was back at McDonald's right away. Some people keep eating even though it makes them very ill.

that is the worst.
That one couple - where the guy kept dangling food in front of her face. What a jerk.

Haha, he is my uncles brother. He is a really nice guy in real life. There are actually three brothers, all are doctors. His children are really great too. His son produces the show.

Sweet!
Do you know how he ended up doing weight loss surgery? The show is obviously more focused on the patients and I don't think they've ever talked about him and his career. Just curious.
I think he has always done it, but he really pioneered the surgeries for people of this size. I also think he invented/designed the machines used for the surgeries.

This is so sad. I cannot imagine spending money on this surgery, and then not trying to break the habit with therapy or doctor's orders or something.
Chuck pissed me off last night. He sees the doctor. Doc says "lose 30# and I'll greenlight you for the surgery." BEFORE THEY LEAVE THE DR.'s OFFICE, CHUCK SAYS "let's go out for one last meal!" (which his wife, to her credit, said 'no' multiple times) WHERE HE THEN ORDERS THE ALL YOU CAN EAT PLATTER. OMFG. This is why I think all of these people need THERAPY for a solid year before they ever see the inside of an O.R. The 'problem' does not magically go away because a Dr has surgically made the size of your stomach smaller. He very obviously had a bad food addiction. Just because it's not heroin or vodka or meth does not mean it will not kill you. Too much chocolate, coffee, or vitamin freaking C can kill you.
He also had the surgery and then went through the McD's drive through and ordered "eggs + bacon", proceeded to puke it all up, made his wife come home from work early and told her "I think I ate something bad" not "I think the eggs and BACON I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO BE EATING made me puke".
Then I changed it back to the Oscar's because he was pissing me off, royally. I'll prob watch the show again on a rerun.
