I've been wanting to get a tablet, but I don't think a kindle fire would do everything I want. I love the surface but can you still use it as an e-reader and get fun apps? It is mostly for me but down the road I can see using some apps with our son (he's 3.5). I don't have a smart phone either so don't even know much about them but I want them. LOL
We have one. You can use it as an e-reader. You can get some fun apps, but there are definitely far fewer of them than in the Android and Apple app stores. I was still able to find fun ones, but if there are particular apps you like and want, they may not be available in the Microsoft store.
We're still glad we got it, because we use it a lot for work, and I can use outlook and word and excel on it in a much more natural way than I can on Android or Apple devices.

Thanks! I really like that I can use office on it. I have a desktop at home. I'm not sure the app thing should even matter to me - there's always youtube for my son and I'm SURE they have something educational available. I want something I can hook up to the TV as well so we can watch network shows from their website. I like the shape and feel of it too.
The HDMI output and USB port were the main reasons I opted for the Surface over an iPad. Being able to use Office helped also. The Windows App store kind of sucks, but I still find what I'm looking for, or something similar. I love mine.
Thank you, this is good to hear. I think my choice is made but I will continue to obsess over it until it's paid for and used. lol.
I have one, and I use it for everything. I don't remember the last time I used a computer. I agree that the apps are more limited, but they have all the major apps I want so it doesn't bother me.
I got it mostly for work-related stuff so that I can take notes without lugging my ancient laptop around. Love having Office on it. Love being able to sync with my desktop/acces stuff via Skydrive or OneDrive or whatever they're calling it this week. OH, my other huge beef is that you're stuck using IE. I hate IE but have yet to find any hacks to get around this. Apparently it's possible to get Chrome on there but it sucks.
The flat keyboard attachment takes some getting used to and it takes me a long time to type anything because it picks up a lot of mistakes but the keyed-keyboard is very expensive.
