I went to college there, and I absolutely loved it. However, the weather sucks ass.
I would love for you to elaborate on this one I'm not familiar with that part of the country (except I figure there are "real" winters out there).
I grew up on the TX coast (hot and humid--hate it), lived in VA for 3 years (perfect weather for me--decent winters), and now in Winston Salem (bleh on the weather, too hot and not enough snow).
I live in Lincoln (about an hour away from Omaha). I really like it here. The weather does suck sometimes. There are a ton of fun shops and places in Omaha and the food is great. I've really enjoyed living in the Lincoln/Omaha area.

I grew up there and went to college there. It might not be the most exciting place in the world, but it's a great place to raise a family. Its also gaining speed culturally--it has a lot more interesting events and concerts happening than it did 10 years ago. It has a great range of events too--from sports like the College World Series, to the indie movie theaters (Dundee and Filmstreams) to the zoo--there's a lot of options. I would totally move back home if it worked out, career-wise, for me.

It's really nasty, sweaty hot in the summer and really fucking blistery cold in the winter.
The zoo is awesome. Lots of awesome concerts/plays/events go through town. Excellent community theatre for adults and children (the Rose), cheap booze (decent microbrews on tap lots of places), great midwestern-greasy-heart-attack-on-a-plate food.
I currently live in Omaha. The weather can fluctuate from cold in the winter to warm in the summer. The winter of 2009/2010 was terrible. It was cold constantly and it snowed a lot. Last winter was amazing. I think we had one or two snows. It's a crapshoot.
We really like living in Omaha. It is super easy to get around. I don't know anyone who works in the metro and takes longer than 30 minutes to get to work. The cost of living is cheap and most people I know own a condo or home.
Omaha has a lot of places to eat and drink throughout the city. We have a very active theater and music scene. We get most major concerts. Omaha has also become a hub for amateur athletics.
Since we are located in the middle of the country, it's easy and relatively inexpensive to fly to anywhere else in the U.S. We are flying to SFO in September and our tickets were $230/person.
The only downside, besides some winters, is that we don't have a professional sports team.
I live in Omaha and am very happy here;) I grew up in a small town in neb and we do have the distinctive humid continental climate(4 distinct seasons). Housing market is very reasonable, commutes are fairly quick (my dh works in west o, we live pretty close to river and it's less than 30 minutes). The smaller communities nearby are pretty nice too. There is a lot of activities going on and who needs a professional team when you have the huskers? Lol
I've lived in Omaha for 8 years. I love it. Housing is super affordable and there is a variety of housing. We live in midtown, which is mainly older houses. But a lot of our friends live out west in new construction. The worst traffic is nothing (but I grew up outside of DC, so anything is better). It is perhaps the easiest town to negotiate.
Omaha is a fairly self contained city, so it has a lot of cultural events, good restaurants and good shopping. Sports are huge here too.
Most of our friends moved away for college and their young 20s and moved back after getting married to raise their families here. Its a great place for a family.
My parents grew up in Bellevue & I've spent a ton of time in this area.
I grew up in Texas & the summers in Nebraska are milder than what we have. The winters vary to the degree of how bad they are, but Nebraska has REAL snow.
I love Nebraska, they have a ton of things to do & you don't feel like the heat will wipe you out (compared to TX).
If you do move to Omaha be sure to try Runza & Broncos (fast food). I think Only one Broncos is around but I crave the Hickory burger. Omaha also has the best Chinese food buffets I've ever seen or had.

The big farmer's markets are in the Old Market and way out west at Village Point on Saturdays and at Aksarben Village on Sunday. (Hint: Aksarben in Nebraska spelled backwards. People love to tell you that). There are also some midweek ones, but I've never been. There are some CSA's. We're members of the Nebraska Food Co-op (nebraskafood.org) and get most of our meat and eggs through it year round and some produce in the growing season.
Haha I love food too!! That's always my first thought when traveling! The farmers market are pretty good and there is an indoor year around called tomato tamota
