Or maybe I should just suck it up and I am in the wrong...I don't know.
I had a project for my class due on Monday. I worked my ASS off on it right until the last minute and was really pleased with how it turned out.
Monday we had a snow day. FUCK. Okay, fine. Tuesday class is open again. I live out in BFE on the mountain where we get a ton more snow/ice than people in town and in the major city. To their 8 inches, we got about a foot. During the night it had also dropped down into the negatives, so everything had frozen over. Tuesday morning I get in my car and tediously start making my way down the mile long driveway. I make it, but get on the road and almost immediately spin out into a ditch. The back of my car was sticking out, and some asshole in a truck comes FLYING up the road and hits the ass end of my car and I spin completely into the ditch, hit my head, chest is bruised thanks to the seat belt, etc... Like an idiot I get out of the car and slip on a patch of ice and land on my head. Ouch.
My car is ruined. I was taken to the hospital. Mild concussion and just some bruises and bumps elsewhere. Obviously, I e-mailed my instructor and let her know I wasn't going to be in class.
Yesterday I went in, even though I definitely wasn't supposed to. But being as I am in the Nursing Division, we can only miss so many days before we are kicked out of the program. So I go into my instructors office to give her the paperwork from the hospital, and find out when I can present my project, and she tells me that because it wasn't turned in on Tuesday, she will not accept it AT ALL. And she will be taking 10% off my final grade because of it.
WTF. I am livid and am seriously considering going to the Director of Nursing about this. I get that there a rules to abide by when in the Nursing program but I was in a freaking car accident trying to get to class. I just don't think it's right. What says ML?
I hope you feel better soon. DO you have paperwork from the hospital or a police report number you can present to the instructor showing that you had a valid excuse?
Second, I am livid for you. I understand standing firm on due dates and whatever, but these are clear extenuating circumstances. It's probably going to piss of your instructor something fierce, but I'm with melissa, appeal to the head of the department.
Yes, the e-mail explained everything. I had also texted a classmate before I sent the e-mail to let her know what happened.
It was a hard copy assignment that we had to present. I also had a tri-fold board type thing to present to the class. This is something that I've been working on since the end of January. I am definitely going to the DoN about this. My classmates are all WTFing it too. This instructor has been AWFUL. She wasn't supposed to be the instructor for the class, but the one who always was and everyone LOVED resigned literally 4 days before the first days of class. I guess this one feels some kind of resentment about having to come to work on such short notice because she absolutely hates teaching. She will literally stand there and go "Well...I'm not going to go over this, you can just read over it yourselves..." Uhhh...Thanks, teach!
I'm glad you are ok first of all. Second, I definitely would take this up the chain of command. You had a legit reason not to be there and documentation to prove it.

Yep, take it up the chain of command.
Actually, the first thing I would do is email your professor that "my understanding of the school's policy, as stated on page X of the handbook, is Y. My being in the hospital undergoing treatment seems to me to fall under the category of being an unexcused absence. I understand if you disagree, but due to the magnitude of the potential impact on my grade I will have to take the issue to Dean Z for further review."
Give them a chance to see that they're wrong and resolve it before you escalate to their boss.
Thank you for the advice, guys. I actually mentioned that to her in our discussion yesterday. She said "well...These things may apply to other programs, but no to the Nursing program. We have a different set of rules..."
I realize you emailed her. Have you shown her the PROOF of what happened? I would do that first before going up the chain. But if she seriously still says no, up and up and away you go!
My devil's advocate (I'm an instructor) question is how many other days have you missed/been late?
I was about 20 minutes late one other time because of an accident right in front of the school parking lot. I was not the only one late because of it either. We have had a brutal winter, as you all very well know lol. But SO has a truck so he will usually drop me off if it's bad weather and school is open. This was the one time he wasn't available to do so.

Sure did! That's why I went straight to her office yesterday morning. I gave her all the documentation from my hospital visit, which stated I was there due to a car accident.
I'm pissed off for you. What were you supposed to do, not go to the hospital so you could turn in a project? Risk serious health issues because of it? Definitely go up the chain of command on this one. That is some serious bullshit.

"I was thinking about getting off on demand, but it sounds like I should be glad that I didn't"
I also went to a shit nursing school with shit professors such as yours; you must die in said wreck because there will be NO excuse for an absence or late work. As they read off their power points word for word... I am sorry you are dealing with this, I hope you are able to resolve it in your case...
