Austin is a good choice - lots of hotels downtown, but depending on the size of your group, there are tons of awesome VRBO houses on Lake Travis & other area lakes, and most of them have pools.
If you were looking for a lazy long weekend of lounging by/in a pool, but proximity to a beach wasn't necessary, and you wanted to avoid Florida and Vegas, where would you go?
I was there in June of last year and while it was hot, it wasn't unbearable. We did nothing but sit in/by the pool, though. I loved it. We stayed at the Colony Palm and with Scott Foley and his wife (not WITH, but they were there too). You can often find great hotel deals for PS on Jetsetter.com

I imagine it sucks for people who don't have the luxury of literally being in a pool all day (for example, the cement pool deck was too hot to walk on with bare feet). But I loved it as a tourist. If I had $2k to spare I'd pack a bag and run away for the weekend.
We rent a house in the Outer Banks each year. We pretty much spend most of the day by the pool drinking, napping, reading on the deck, or on the beach. It might not be the easiest to get to if one is flying in from out of town-- they'd have to rent a car.
We rented a house in the NC mountains one summer and it was gorgeous - great weather, day drinking was probably happening all around and I missed it bc I was in HS, haha.
Or the outer banks could be nice, not in the summer, but may or september - but I'm not sure of the closest airport.
Honestly, I'd just start randomly browsing on VRBO. Assign everyone in the group a location near a major airport, and each person looks for kick ass houses with pools.
This is probably how I would approach it, especially since you don't have a particular time of the year in mind.

I think renting a car will be a must no matter what. That was probably Issue #2 that kept this past weekend from being great instead of just ok.
The closest airport to the Outer Banks is Norfolk, Virginia. From the airport, on a good day, in the off season, you can make it to the top of the Outer Banks in about 90 minutes. There is a toll road as well and depending on season/day of the week it can be as much as $6 I think? We have ez-pass and just suck it up.

Mexico! You can fly a 3 hour direct flight to Cancun. We rented a condo in Play Del Carmen for something like $115 a night. There was a pool in the courtyard and the beach was 3 blocks away. The beaches are cool because they all have beach clubs where you can pull up a chair and order food/booze all day. Plus people walk around serving chili covered mango mmm.
I was going to plug OBX but thought it would be too far from an airport. But it's a great place to rent a giant house with a pool and hangout for a weekend. They also offer good deals for 5 day weekends before the high season.
You'd need a car from the airport, but also for groceries and this:
We stayed in this place last year in the off season (mid-May) and it was a great deal. I'd suggest September though, since the water is still warm but the rates are lower.

That looks nice. Was the pool heated enough at that time of the year? We're not wedded to a time of year, but I'm guessing late February to early June will be preferred because the Midwestern crew will be looking to defrost. September in the Midwest is pretty great.

We didn't need to heat the pool, but the weather was warm when we went. But I'd probably pay to have it heated anytime before mid-May.
We absolutely loved that house and wanted to stay there again, but the week we wanted wasn't available. Sad panda. There are other houses that are also great-- we needed to have an elevator for my grandmother, so our options were limited.

Considering I managed to sprain my motherfucking ankle after less than an hour at the beach, an elevator is probably a good idea for me.

WOMP WOMP.
Probably. I have to say that having an elevator saved my fatass when we had to bring in all of the groceries.
If you do go to OBX, you must make a trip to Duck Donuts and have the maple bacon donut (or 12).
swank, mine isn't until September. I might need to have a donut and a Leinenkugel Summer Shandy this weekend to tide me over. LOL.
Since we can't go this summer, we are thinking September might work. I'll have to check in with you once we make our plans!
We're switching it up this year and staying in South Nags head. Beautiful house on the beach with a pool and elevator. I'd be happy to PM you the link to the house if you want.

Asshole, sorry for post jacking your thread for my awesome meetup plans.
LOL. It's cool.
We had a house with a pool this time. But we weren't as close to the beach as I thought we were going to be. And the pool wasn't heated. And we didn't have a car.
I think the other people had more fun than I did. I just had an idea of how the weekend was going to be and nothing went like that.
Throw in a sprained ankle, some fire ant bites, a giant fight with my H, and the worst wedding I've ever been to, and I really want a do-over. LOL.

We have a number of friends family out there. Apparently, it's where Lutherans from Orange County go to retire. LOL Anyway, they gave us the avoid May - October as a general visitation guide. As it can be truly hit or miss. By miss, I mean miserable.
I learned the hard way that August is truly miserable in Palm Springs because of the humidity.
lasagnasshole I am also sorry that the weekend didn't go as planned. What did you think the weekend was going to be lke?
ALSO - how is your ankle?! did you see the ortho today?
It's too long to type and I don't want to get upset focusing on the negative. I did have fun with friends, though, and I would like to do it again but just change some things to maximize the positive and minimize the negative.
Saw the ortho today. High ankle sprain. Just wrapping it and taking it easy. Worst part: I forgot to ask for painkillers. LAME.

Lasagna, I'm so sorry that your weekend trip sucked. But I'm glad that your ankle is only sprained. {{{hugs}}}
