If you were looking for a lazy long weekend of lounging by/in a pool, but proximity to a beach wasn't necessary, and you wanted to avoid Florida and Vegas, where would you go?
Probably something I could drive to (since if I were just going to be hanging around a pool it wouldn't be worth a flight for a long weekend to me). Therefore, I'm really no help to you (since I don't know anything in your area).

Distance doesn't matter, as someone will have to fly, even if others can drive.
Day drinking = of course, but it would likely just happen at the pool.
Season is really dependent on location - July some place where it's 100 degrees sounds yucky, but 60 degrees in March would be a no-go. So I'm just looking for ideas and could plan the timing of the trip around that.
Basically, we are contemplating making friend vacation a recurrent event, but far more hanging out happened at the pool than the beach. And we aren't ruling out the beach, but it might be easier to eschew that component.

Hrmm, distance is a factor then to the airport. I was going to suggest something like the Berkshires or white mountains in NH. Would there be interest in renting a house on a lake?
I wonder if you didn't go to the beach because that involved walking or driving and wasnt' as private?
We do a friend vacation every july up in Maine on a lake and its AWESOME. You can sun on the dock, swim in the lake (its beautiful and clean), take out the boat, go canoeing, etc. We play corn hole during the day and then at night play things like settlers of cataan, cards against humanity, etc.
Do you want to be at a resort with a pool, or renting a house with a pool?
I would say the Hamptons (which I know is beach, but a lot of houses have pools and there's a lot of fun stuff around), but I think you'd hate the Hamptons.

I want to go to there.
There were many factors that kept us away from the beach, many of which might not be replicated in the future.

Somewhere like the Poconos?
I think that is almost certain.
Also, there is no set budget, but I know the Hamptons are way out of everyone's budget.
A beach house with a nice pool in South Carolina or an all-inclusive in Mexico. Ooh, or wherever it was that gives you a new margarita with each new lap around the lazy river!
But you know, you really need to consider the cultural aspects of each location before you can select the spot that is most beneficial for your personal and professional development.

I would pick Atlantis @ the Bahamas.
There's a lazy river pool I always wanted to check out in Phoenix - JW Marriott Desert Ridge
The Palm Springs area has Coachella and Stagecoach coming up in April. It will be SRO at every pool in the area.
We're not talking about doing this soon. Just brainstorming for the future. We'd adjust the time based on the location - i.e., no Florida in March, no Austin during SXSW or ACL, etc.
Fly into Vegas, get a $17 rental car, and stay at a swanky desert resort. If you have friends from all over the country meeting up it's somewhat centrally located and you can often find flight deals. I would avoid either coast.

I am pretty sure that the Atlantis would be the seventh layer of hell for the OP.

I really, really, really, REALLY do not want to go to Vegas. Like, I would rather not go on the trip than go to Vegas, which is why my OP said not Vegas. I don't even want to go near Vegas.
We're only sort of spread out, with some in the Midwest and some on the East Coast.

I really love that JW - however, as I recall, that JW had some kind of Nickelodeon Kid's Club, which meant the lazy river was anything but lazy, LOL. Lots and lots of kids. We always got as far away from that area as possible
Honestly, I'd just start randomly browsing on VRBO. Assign everyone in the group a location near a major airport, and each person looks for kick ass houses with pools.
What about Northern (lower) Michigan in the summer? Rent a house on Lake Michigan near Petoskey, Charlevoix, or Traverse City. There is actually a real lazy river trip you can take in East Jordan (I think it's actually the Jordan river - SO FUN) and you can hit up Traverse City wineries OR just lay around at the pool/beaches of Lake Michigan. It is pretty spectacular in the summer.
