I don't charge for an initial phone call, but I do charge for an in-person consultation. Every firm I've worked charged for consultations. But there are firms that do not.
Do most attorneys charge for an initial consultation?
We don't charge for ICs at my firm.
If you don't know any lawyers, and don't have any friends/acquaintances that have engaged an attorney in the practice area you need advice in, I'd start by asking anyone you know who's in a field that's adjacent to the field you're looking for an attorney in. Need a real estate attorney? Ask anybody you know who's a realtor, mortgage broker, etc. for a rec. At least they can probably tell you who returns their calls and is easy to work with.
I would preferably ask another attorney--like a coworker's husband, friend's mom, etc. even if you know an attorney in another state if they have any good ideas. Even if it's in a different area of law they often have good contacts.
