A. Go on a trip to Hawaii at 6-7 months pregnant? (How late can you fly, anyway?)
B. Go on a trip to Hawaii with a young infant?
My family is planning a big trip to Hawaii in April 2015 with the whole immediate family, spouses, and ILs. H and I are hoping to start TTC within the next 6 months, and the timing is not ideal with this vacation. If we were to start sooner, we might end up having a baby by the time the trip happens. If we start around the time we originally planned (end of summer), I could be quite pregnant at the time of the trip.
This is all very hypothetical and obviously there is absolutely no way of knowing how things might go with respect to TTC, but I'm just curious to hear perspectives from some of you who may have had experience with taking a vacation when quite pregnant or with a very young baby. I don't really intend to plan TTC around this vacation, but it's just something that's crossed my mind.
Tough question... First pregnancy, I would have chosen 6-7 mo pregnant. I loved being pregnant & felt great right up until I was admitted to the hospital.
Second pregnancy, I was in a lot of pain from about 16 weeks on. It hurt to sit, stand, walk, and lay down. I had PT, but nothing made it better. I barely slept. I struggled to do daily things with my toddler to keep him entertained.
I think not knowing how things would go, I would choose with an infant, especially since you would have extra babysitters.
B. I have been on the flight to hawaii not pregnant and it gets uncomfortable just sitting on the plane for that long, i would definitely not want to do it pregnant. Plus if you're not pregnant, you can at least have a few drinks on the beach, even if you do have a new baby. We went to florida with G when he was 5 months, and that was easy peasy. Younger than that probably wouldn't have been much harder.
Ha, seems to be pretty split so far. In theory, I would much rather go before a baby is born. However, I'm looking forward to doing some active things too, like hiking, that I don't know I'll be able to do if pregnant. I know it's so hard to predict and that everyone's pregnancies are so different. The point about there being lots of babysitters is definitely a good one.
I went to Jamaica 5 1/2 months pregnant and it was so relaxing. Having an infant with me would be way too much work, and probably the least relaxing thing I could think of.
To be honest, if this is a big, "once in a lifetime" trip, I'd consider holding off TTC. At least long enough so that I wouldn't be in the later months of pregnancy.
If this is a trip that happens every few years and it wouldn't be a big deal to miss it, then I'd continue w/ my plans.

A. Especially if I could upgrade my seat to business or first class. I might start ttc a month or two later, to be a month or 2 less pregnant at the time of the vacation but honestly, I probably wouldn't even do that.

Thank goodness I'm not the only one.
I did go on a beach vacation when I was 9 weeks pg with Joanna. That was alright, but not being able to drink was a downside. And this pregnancy, I have just been really uncomfortable and pissed off, so I don't know how much I'd enjoy it.
I will say that I would not want to go during the immediate PP period, when I still need giant pads. After that, maybe. Having other people there to help out is big.
we went on a large family beach trip when I was 11 weeks pregnant, and I was the only one not tossing back cocktails. I am still a TINY bit bitter. lol.

A. so you can actually enjoy the beach. Once you have a kid a vacation becomes a business trip, you're working you just have the perk of working in a nicer location.

It's not a once in a lifetime trip for us because we travel a lot, but my parents have been trying to arrange it for a long time now since it's so hard to get everyone in one place at the same time. I definitely don't want to miss it.
At the same time, we've already put off TTC for years for various reasons and we're finally ready so we're not going to hold off any longer on account of a vacation. We will be going regardless, and it may not be ideal either way.
I think you'd be fine either way. Having said that, there are a lot of unknowns with TTC, so you don't really know how pregnant you might be, or how old your baby might be, and those can make a BIG difference. I was comfortable on a transatlantic flight at 27 weeks. After about 33 weeks, there is no way I would have been able to do that (and airlines generally won't let you fly past 36 weeks).
I've heard that flying with a young infant (3-4 months) is pretty easy…much easier than say, a 2-year-old.
Okay, I'm pretty happy about all these A responses. I don't mind not being able to drink. I was worried that I'd get a bunch of responses saying vacationing while pregnant is a nightmare. (And who knows, I may not even be knocked up by then.)
I would rather have gone pregnant than with a newborn. I remember daydreaming hardcore and looking EVERYWHERE in our budget right around 6-7 mo wanting so very badly to go to a beach somewhere. I was stressed, uncomfortable and so desperately wanted warmth (it was winter).
Also I had a very, very challenging newborn and infant. A flight from Boston to the west coast would have been impossible, let alone an additional leg to Hawaii. No way.
