I took cycling before pregnancy and a few times early in the first tri. My OB said I could continue my regular fitness routine, just keep an eye on heart rate. I'm interested in doing cycling again but wondering if all the ups and downs in the seat would be bad for baby? Any advice?
Well I can't speak to what is bad for the baby. But I'm 17 weeks and I went back to spin after my first trimester. I'm definitely slower and I don't go crazy but I feel good during and after a class. I would go and just listen to your body. If something doesn't feel good slow down or take a break.
My doctor has also said I could still specifically spin. There is a spin instructor in my prenatal yoga class that still teaches. There also is a spin instructor at my studio that recently had her baby and taught until her 8th month.
I'm six months along and I go to spin once a week. My classmates get a kick out of me. I go all out if I feel good but scale back when I don't. My instructor isn't into a ton of jumps, but when we had a sub a few times and she called for a lot of them, I just did like 50 percent of them. I also felt markedly better and much more comfortable in spin class when I was in the second tri. For the first 14-15 weeks, I had weird crampy feelings and my heart rate was out of control during sprints, etc. I wore a heart rate monitor and just scaled back at many points. Now, I just pay attention to my body and wear a monitor if I remember to do so. I also wear a maternity support belt, which helps keep my belly feeling good.

Also, you might really need to adjust the way your bike is set up to account for you belly. My normal fairly aggressive road bike now looks like a beach cruiser. But it works
I'm skipping class and just doing the normal exercise bike on the gym floor, but it's more preference than real concern. I love spin class and love going full tilt, and my hr spikes very early and stays that way. So for me, I'd have to back off *significantly*, and at that point I just wouldn't be enjoying it.
FastHands, your HR may get more normal later in your pregnancy. Mine was scary fast in the first tri when I did almost any kind of cardio. It's really normal now (although I'm much less mobile, in general, so that may account for the slowdown, too).

It's just normal for me, not pg-related. After about 60-90 seconds of any real cardio, my hr is about 195-205, and stays there. So anything vigorous (sprints, jumps, hard hills) would be out of the question. And that's the fun part! Lol
