How long should I keep my pay-stubs? I recently moved and found a box filled with random paperwork including pay-stubs from 2009 at a company I no longer work at. I have a tendency to keep things far longer than I need, so I'm just curious, should I continue to keep them or shred and trash them?
This is a good question. In cleaning out my office I found paystubs dating back to when I started my job in 2007 . I have moved twice since then, it makes me sad that for some reason I have felt the need to drag this around for 5 years.

I used old paystubs when my identity got stolen. Someone opened phone, cable, gas, and electric in my name in Arizona. I submitted copies of my paystubs and college transcripts proving I lived in Alaska at the time. Every few years I stick all my stubs in a manilla envelope and write the date on it. I think I have paystubs from 10 years ago. I think you should at least keep them for two years though.
