I remember losing mine gradually the first time. It just was like my heavy CM days. It really wasn't that big of a deal. Apparently it regenerates over and over again until you are ready to deliver.
For me it started with one big mucous-y, blood streaked blob that came out over several hours and then over the next few days it came out in little bits of mocous type snot. That was 6 years ago so my memory is a little rusty.
Both times mine were like large blobs of blood-tinged snot. First time I delivered 5 days later. Second pregnancy I lost it less than 24hrs before delivery when active labor began. It was very obvious to me both times and I didn't appear to loose any in pieces like others describe.
I'm 37 weeks and have been gradually losing mine for about a week now. It is very snot like...green mucus, no blood at all. It really doesn't mean much other than you are probably starting to dilate and labor could still be weeks away.
Not everyone has one. The cervix produces mucus to help keep it shut and keep bacteria out. It may "ball up" or it may just stay more fluidish. When your cervix begins to open a bit, whatever was sitting in there will come lose. So it could mean your cervix is a little bit dilated - like, just a hair - which would not be weird for anyone at 38 weeks.

I lost mine a week and a half ago. Contractions picked up that day, but at only 34 weeks and no dilation they used drugs to slow the contractions. It came out after I got out of the shower and was like a big nasty ball of snot on my inner thigh. I knew what it was because this is my second pregnancy and I remember losing it the first time. That time I was in labor within hours of losing it.
