When do kids typically start school where you are? Georgia has a preschool funded by the lottery, so it is free to send your kid at age 4, just like a regular school year. You do preschool (k-4) then start "school" at kindergarten (k-5). When I was younger, I went to private school and the school was k-4 through 8th. I had no idea that other schools don't start until k-5.

In MD, there's only Kindgergarten which starts at age 5. Anything prior to that is private preschools. Both of my girls will attend that from ages 2-4 before kingergarten at age 5.
2s - 2 half days 3s - 3 half days 4s - 4 half days

In Mass. official preschool doesn't start until 2.9, anything before is kind of like pre preschool. They are until kindy but with even that most towns only have half day and you need to pay for full day. Then it is normal school.

There until Kindy and it isn't free of course. Actually preschool is very expensive.
Pre school is free here, but has limited spaces. Some of the schools are funded by organizations like United Way others are state and a combo. If you can't get in then you have to pay. Kindergarten is fully funded, but no compulsory. I think a lot of people believe that it is so pretty much all kids at kindergarten age goes.
In FL we have VPK and it is free to everyone. For VPK you have to be 4 prior to September 1st of that year, so 2016 for us. They offer a school year and/or summer program I believe. M's daycare offers VPK.

There is a transitional K here for kids caught in the Fall birthday gap as CA moves the age rwquirement back but typically pre-school around here is private.
oh, i think there are some government funded preschools but they are need based. i think.
That's true. Most public schools in southern md have a pre-k program, but all are need based. My little sister got into pre-k at a public school because they weren't full, but I think that's rare. That was also 10 years ago.

5 for kindergarten, nothing public/free before then aside from need-based gov't programs. It sucks. Preschool and pre-k are freaking expensive for a non-church setting.
There is preschool readiness here for kids who barely miss the cut off for K. So, older 4's but they need to be able to do certain things to be eligible like be able to write their name, etc. I am not aware of all the programs as different counties have different things.
public preschool 3-4 is need based first for special needs and then financially. I believe it can be paid for if there are ever any extra spots (which isn't typical).
