I have the ameda, I chose it over the Pisa because it's a closed system and milk cannot get into the mechanics of the unit, it just seemed more hygienic to me, plus I would imagine the resale would be better. Of course if most moms are able to get a free pump, the second hand market is likely small. I have never heard of the other one pump.
Just a note - the home medical dept at the hospital that I work at supplies the pumps for the hospital L&D. With the new pumps that are covered by insurance, you just get the pump, not the whole carrying bag like previously. They do still carry the bags, but they are an additional cost. something to consider.
I am torn because it says Hygeia are "hospital grade" and endorsed by la Leche league...
When I was researching pumps originally a lc I saw highly recommended the hygeia. It used to be solely for WIC participants because it is a closed system and multiple people can use them with out contamination but now they are being sold on the open market.

I had the APY and loved it. It died after the second kid. I just heard back from my ins carrier and I can get the APY Hygeia Q or Medela Advanced (it doesn't say PISA). I think I'm going to go with the APY again.
As PP stated, they don't come with all the bells and whistles. What ins do you have? They only sent me 3 websites but said there are more. I kind of want to keep looking.

I would get the Hygeia. I've heard really good things about it and will probably buy one for baby #2. I used a Freestyle for X. The Hygeia is a closed system so is supposed to be a "multi-user" safe pump. I didn't think the Ameda was? I always thought it was an open system like the Medela.

It's closed. But I don't think that matters because you're not renting it, you get to keep it

I started off with the Ameda. I liked it, but I didn't love it. I had some issues with the power cord and since I didn't "love" the pump I decided I would see what I got with my insurance. I was able to get a Medela. It wasn't the PISA, but was just called a double breast pump. I liked the Medela much more and that's what I used for the majority of the time that I pumped. I've never heard of the Hygeia. My only concern would be needing to purchase extra parts, which you could easily do for the Ameda or Medela, but I've never seen parts for the Hygeia.

Good to know. I guess I was thinking more for re-sale or buying used rather than renting. My friend EP'd for 12 months with an Ameda and loved it. I only liked the Hygeia better because I thought it was the only closed system. Thanks!

I have blue cross blue shield. Actually they also offered that Medela one (not Pisa) so same offerings as you.
The Pisa worked well but I have nothing to compare to... It did get milk in the tubes a couple times. It took a while to pump enough milk but that might just be my body ... I always got enough though.
If it's an open system, do you have to clean the tubes?
I used Ameda and it worked well for me. My insurance covers all three and I was thinking about getting the PISA. Now I'm having doubts, lol.
With my Pisa milk did get in the tubes. You can boil them in a pot of water then run the pump with just the tubes to dry them out . I replaced them once in a year I think.
