This is something of an opposite to last week's slow book question. In honor of the slow but excellent book I am reading right now*, what are some books you really enjoyed that you or others would consider slow or slow-starters?
* Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. I'm not far enough to call it a favorite, but I really like it so far.
Ann Patchett's books are often described as slow, though I don't really think of them that way. The Solace of Leaving Early and The Used World by Haven Kimmel, two of my all-time favorites, both are rather slow at the beginning.
Stephen King's It, which is one of my favorite books. I don't mind a book being slow if it's for a good reason (i.e. character development, sense of place/time,etc.). For me, if it's well written, this helps me really get lost in a book. I love when that happens.
I also enjoyed the Little Stranger. Books with a very present "mood" like that can be slow, but as long as they are consistent and interesting in other ways, I'm hooked.
Well, my favorite book period is Lord of the Rings. I don't actually think it's slow, but I know a lot of people think of it that way.
I like all sorts of books that are often considered slow, including ones by Barbara Kingsolver, Ann Patchett, James Michener. Like @astrid mentioned, I loved Les Mes but at 1400 pages it takes a very long time to get through.
