One of my MIL's (yes, I am lucky enough to have two! H's Dad got married a few years ago.) recently wrote me and suggested that I add diapers and wipes to my registry. She is throwing me a shower in a few weeks. I was just planning to buy that kind of thing myself and it seemed unnecessary to register for it since I don't know/care yet about brands and types etc. Also, maybe some brands will work out better than others but will need to try them out on the baby to know. I also didn't think that people would chose to buy that sort of thing for a gift. Do you guys put that stuff on your registry or just plan to buy it yourself? Thoughts?

I didn't put them on mine but I'm going to a shower in a couple of weeks and noticed she has wipes and diapers on hers. I would rather buy her more "fun" stuff I guess but it is true that you need to have some in stock. I would use the registry for more permanent, useful stuff.
I didn't, and wouldn't, put something like that on a registry. If people want to get you diapers and wipes, they'll do it without you being registered for it. And I'm with you -- you don't know what brands or even sizes will work best for you, so there's no point in laying in a lot of stock right now. I know some places will let you return diapers for a different size (or maybe even exchange brands?) but that seems like an awful lot of trouble to go through in your first few weeks post-partum when you don't have what you really need.
With my first pregnancy, I did register for diapers and wipes. I registered for several different types of diapers so I could try several out. It worked well for us.

I put them on mine because I intend to cloth-diaper, so I registered for a few different kinds to try. I also registered for a couple different kinds of "green" disposables for the same reason. If no one buys them as shower gifts, then I can get the completion discount.
I put them on there more as a reminder that I need to buy them more than anything else. I'm using my registry as a sort of personal shopping list, though.

I am going to have my sister request that everyone bring diapers to the baby shower.. The more packs you bring, the more tickets for the raffle or game or whatever. They did that with my friend and she didn't buy diapers for at least a year and a half... When things were too small she exchanged them.

I put cloth diapers on there but not regular at first b/c I figure people will buy whatever worked for them/is on sale.
I just added some ( cloth and disposables) ( before opening this post I was promoted to add them by amazon's registry kick-starter.) because I figured it would be nice to have some different brands in the house to see what works or what doesn't.
I put them on mine, but that was more for the purpose of keeping myself organized with a list of what I need and also for the completion discount later on. I don't think I am having a shower so I think only my mom and sister have looked at the list at this point.
I dont think you need to bother. Most people will buy the kind they want even if you mark down a certain brand. And people won't assume if you didnt register that you dont want any.

Exactly this. We had a handful of packs of diapers, and a single pack of wipes on our registry. None were bought off the registry, but we got about 6 boxes of diapers and 10 packs of wipes. I also didn't put any clothes on my registry, but we got a ton. I think most people will buy whatever is on sale or they like best.

I put them on mine because I really do hope people will buy them. I would love to not have to pay for them for a while, they can be pricey! Otherwise, by them being on there I should get the completion discount if I have to buy them myself.

I don't think it would hurt. I would look on a registry to see what brand if I were buying diapers, but I usually don't buy diapers. I registered for them, but I only received one box of a different brand.
I didn't have any on there, but people gave them as an add-on to their gifts. They were all Huggies. After the first box, we realized she wasn't a Huggies gal so we exchanged the rest for other stuff.
