DD1 is starting to get invited to her friends birthday parties. Is it odd, when I RSVP for the party, to ask what the child is interested in or gift ideas?

I usually ask the parents "what so and so is into right now" because if you ask what they would like they always pull the "oh nooooo! You don't have to get a gift!" BS. Either it's not weird or I'm weird.
Also, DD is 4 and cannot be trusted to tell me what her friends like.

I think that's fine. I'd welcome the question rather than DD get a random toy. At least that way, she would get something she'd love of use-although I often just tell people gifts are unnecessary bc she already has a lot, and if they'd still like to do something then books and art supplies are always winners.
