Autofocus on the point that you want to be in focus, then switch the lens to manual. This will stop the lens from focusing on a point that you don't want.
I have crappy eyes, so I'm almost always on AF. I set the focus point, I haven't had an issue with it switching ( unless I'm in Live view, where it goes everywhere)

Interesting; I usually stay on AF and then change the focal length to determine which item I want to focus on. I like this idea though!
Just started taking an intro to photography class to learn how to use my DSLR. The teacher recommends auto-focus and manually being able to choose the spot you focus on. I'm messing up the technical terms. But basically some auto focus cameras have like 9 or more focus points and the camera can pick the object to focus on and auto focus to it. This can be a pain if you have several different items in the picture. My camera is set to auto-focus with only three focus point options but I choose which one. I have a left point, middle and right. I can choose to use the left one and then the lens auto focuses. Right now we are using auto focus but shooting in manual.
