My aunts both did this because their babies were born bald. They used KY jelly to get it to hold. When I volunteered at a hospital, they did the same thing for the girl babies so it's not weird to me at all.
I was prepared to do it with my girls but they were both born with so much hair that they could hold little barrettes from day one.

my niece had a bow glued to her head when I went to meet her in the hospital for the first time. my brother was all "they use glue! I had no idea! its GLUED TO HER HEAD!!"
The hospital did this to L the day after she was born. The brought her to the nursery to take her picture for the website and when they brought her back, I took off her hat and was like, "wtf is this?" I'm not sure what kind of "glue" they used, but it fell off within an hour or so. Apparently they do that to all baby girls at that hospital for their picture.

Wait, what? I thought KY jelly was supposed to make things, uh, not stick?

The hospital put a bow on DD, but it was made out of gauze and they taped it to the beanie the slipped on her. We took the bow off as soon as we were in our recovery room because it was so big and in the way. WTF to gluing it on.
I loved the beanie though. She was stinkin cute in it.
While I would not have put those things on either of my daughters' heads, I'm sure the majority of the people who do buy them do it to be "cutesy", not to make a statement about their baby's sex.
I wonder if those who think it's about accessorizing to denote sex, think the same thing about boys wearing baby baseball caps.
That being said, there will be no glued-on bows on my baby. LOL.
For people wondering what it looks like:
I am no fan of giant bows held on with giant elastic bands. But a tiny bow like that glued on seems actually dangerous to me. Unless it's superglue it could easily get knocked off or sweated off and that sucker's going right into the baby's mouth. I cannot imagine this being a good idea.

I just think that I hate big giant bows so much I will marshal any and all evidence in favor of them being lame.
I know there are big bow lovers here. I don't hate you. Just the bows. Let's be friends!
