I think it's okay to make fun of anyone who denies scientific fact.
And I think the whole "omigah, I'm a persecuted Christian" is so ridiculous. Guess what? Creationists have managed to strongarm their SCIENCE-DENYING nonsense into SCIENCE CLASSES in public schools in several states. They ain't hurting for numbers or power.
In the US tho, the Christian population in the loudest, and the largest, and generally the group trying to legislate their beliefs. So the obviously get the more vocal opposition.

The Christian persecution complex drives me batty.
Especially since many of those same people are the first to persecute others for their beliefs.
"The good thing about science is that it is true whether you believe it or not." Creationism has been disproven by science. Does that mean I think less of creationists? No, they are people and people deserve to have their rights respected.
But I won't be taking any science lessons from them, either.
"Creationist" is not a religious denomination as far as I know, but rather describes a belief held by some Christians.
I am fine with the criticism of that belief or any other religious-related belief or practice that I find ridiculous, such as bigotry, objection to birth control, objectification of women, child marriage, etc. That goes for Christian and non-Christian religions.
I make fun of people who think it is appropriate to try to strong arm the teaching of what are religious stories in schools. And who then think it is appropriate to keep the religious stories of other faiths out.
I get what you're saying in theory regarding respecting people's religious beliefs, but do you extend your respect to those who, for example, persecute homosexuals in the name of their religion?
You forgot the important caveat that always follows these discussions about leaving each to their own beliefs , "as long as they are not hurting anyone else."
There is the rub- omitting science from public education is a disservice to the education of this country. Promoting the notion that science is not to be trusted or that scientists are lying is a disservice to this nation's intelligence.
I can't condemn a whole group of people, simply because some are assholes.
You can condemn the assholes, though. And really, we're not talking about condemning them, just making fun of them.
I feel like after all the talk we have on ML about bullying and such... that this is such an odd thing to have a unity horse about. "Let's make fun of people, that'll show 'em!"
The only thing that re-enforces is that we are the assholes. :/
I'm not going up to creationists on the street like:
We're talking here. Among "friends." I have no trouble telling my friends that I think creationism is scienceless nonsense and that I am deeply trouble by the (let's face it, 99.9% christian) movement to have it taught in public PUBLIC PUBLICschool in science class, as if it was a legitimate scientific theory.

who is being bullied for the religious beliefs on ML?
Uhm, I didn't say anything about being bullied on ML.
What I mean is, when you make fun of someone, you are no better than the asshole you are making fun of. I must be alone in this belief, though.

If defending fact, standing up for equality, and being vocal about disagreeing with (and even mocking) people who openly fight for the opposite makes me an asshole, then sign me up.
Clarification: by "creationism" I (as used in this thread) mean literal six-day creation, denying of evolution, orchestrated solely by God. I don't think believing in evolution by any stretch means you are a de facto atheist.

Also, I hate the "why is it ok to pick on Christians?" argument. I feel like it's right next to "reverse racism." Your religion is on our money, in our politics, touched on everyday in our classrooms in The Pledge. No one is picking on you, they're just trying to break out from under you.
I get what you're saying in theory regarding respecting people's religious beliefs, but do you extend your respect to those who, for example, persecute homosexuals in the name of their religion?
I do not believe that anyone should be persecuted because of who they are. I truly with all my heart believe that people are born gay and it is not a choice and I fully support gay rights!
On another note, I do believe that people also have the right to believe that homosexuality is wrong if it is in accordance with their own personal religion. But they do not have the right to persecute anyone.
I don't believe in teaching any religion in public school or pushing your own beliefs down anyone's throat. But, again I believe that anyone should be allowed to believe and practice their own beliefs/religions without persecution from others as long as they are not hurting anyone else.
When I say to a creationist "I think your theory is not science and does not belong in science class" I am not persecuting anyone.
I'm not even touching the whole homosexuality angle we've now introduced here.
I do not make fun of someone for their personal beliefs that they keep personal. I do side-eye someone who publicly states their personal beliefs when their beliefs have been proven in a measurable manor to be wrong. It honestly has no impact on me what your religion is or isn't, if you are wrong based on scientific FACT, you are wrong.
