...I need a new pair of black boots. I had a pair with like a 2.5" heel that I bought from Nine West a few years ago, but the toes are pretty much shredded. I have a pair of flat black boots (very casual, sort of a distressed leather look) so I want a more dressy pair of black boots. I'm not sure if I should go with a heel or just a nicer flat pair. Suggestions? I'm willing to go up to like $200. Thanks!
Those are fairly similar to the Nine West ones I had...same heel height, but I like the toe shape on this one more. Thanks! I'll have to keep these in mind.

I think heeled boots look a little dated. Boots can be dressy even if they are flat (just depends on the style and leather texture), or you could go with a wedge rather than a heel.

Yeah, I was kind of wondering that too...about them looking dated. I've never really been a fan of the SM Intyce boots, but maybe a taller wedge would work.

Obviously it depends on the boot, but there are still some nice heel ones that still can be worn.
I know it's harder to wear the riding/motorcycle boots when I want to dress up. Especially for the office! Pumps in Chicago during winter would be brutal! Ha.
I think wedge boots look more dated than heeled boots...or will anyway since they are more of a trend. A heeled boot is pretty classic IMO. There are exceptions like vamp noted, depending on the boot. For example, this style is dated because it features a few distinct trends: Chunky heel, platform, slouchiness: piperlime.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=81127&vid=1&pid=401827&scid=401827002
But THIS style is classic (if it were in leather), has been around forever, and will likely continue to be around:
You could always do a heeled bootie or ankle boot. But with a max 2.5 inch heel, they may be mature looking. But I guess it really depends on the boot.
Yeah, I have a pair of 4" black ankle boot, I just wanted a new pair for skinny jeans and whatnot. And I'm not a stickler on the heel height being 2.5", up to 4" would be fine. Hmmmm, so many things to consider! I may end up buying two new pairs of black boots this fall
