One of the patients has been flown to a hospital in a medical helicopter. Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville is taking several of the other patients.
Several police cars and ambulances are at the school. Three medical helicopters are also there, ready to transport any of the injured.
A student reported that someone came into the school with a knife and started slashing people, including some of his friends. That information has not been confirmed by police.
A woman told Pittsburgh's Action News 4 that her son was in the hall, getting ready for class, when he heard screaming and saw someone stabbing students.
Police have one person in custody but have not released that person's name yet.
Students have begun to come out of the building and are gathered around the main entrance while emergency responders remain at the scene and police officers check the school room by room.
School buses are lined up on the campus, waiting to take students home for the day.
A parent said she was told by a school security employee that middle school students will be dismissed first and bused home. Meanwhile, the high school remains on lockdown until the school can safely dismiss those students.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."
How does a person walk around for 15 minutes with a knife stabbing people without being tackled and subdued?
Edited to add that I feel horrible for the victims and their families - how horrible.
I was talking with a co-worker about this. I think with a gun - it's obvious - you can hear it and everyone is conditioned at this point to know what to do. With a knife, it's a lot quieter and would probably elicit much more confusion about what is happening - so no immediate lock down.

Timing aside, it sounds like the principal tackled him? I'm watching the news conference right now and that's what it sounds like--it was a quick side note.

How terribly sad For some reason the word "slashing" is getting to me, more so than stabbing and I can't quite figure out why. Stabbing seems calculated and I picture slashing like a frenzy, wildly flailing. Both horrible.
3 still in surgery, but the other 4 severely injured seem to be doing ok, per CNN. Suspect was a student, 16.
They had a video of him on local news being driven out of the police station. I didn't watch it but I'm assuming its only a matter of time before the media gets his name. Unless the media isn't allowed to announce his name because he is 16.
Legally, they can use his name. It's a matter of public record once he's booked.
Seven teenagers and an adult were taken to Forbes Regional Hospital, Dr. Chris Kauffman, the trauma director there, told NBC News. The seven were stabbed in the chest, back and abdomen, he said. He characterized some of the injuries as life-threatening but said everyone was expected to live.
At least three students were in surgery. Others were undergoing CT scans and X-rays and could require surgery later, Kauffman said.
“None of these are superficial wounds,” he told reporters. “These are all significant stabbing wounds, every one.”
One girl may have saved the life of one of the stabbed by applying pressure to his wounds, hospital officials said. The girl was not hurt.
April I believe is the highest month for suicides. My husband also took his life in April so it is something I'm very alert to now. It's a terrible, horrible month and I wish we could skip it every year.
