Sorry, I know I haven't been talking politics much but I have to share this story.
DH had me go with him to a town about 30 minutes outside Portland to look at a car he was interested in. We get there and he immediately jumps out of the car because apparently it was a lot better than the pictures. The woman walks out of the house and starts chatting with him about it, saying her H will be out in a minute because he's in the restroom.
DH and lady are chatting about the car and she tells him it's been sticking in 1st gear and was completely honest about how it needs some work. She then goes inside to get her H.
We're standing in their driveway, I'm holding PJ, and we hear screaming. We can't tell where it's coming from but at first it sounds like it's kids yelling, then it sounds like someone's in trouble. DH and I both look at each other while we're waiting for lady to come back out of the house with her H.
About 2 minutes later two cop cars pull up and ask if we called. One cop starts charging towards the house looking for lady. She comes, screaming, from around the other side of the house with wounds on her neck and hand marks like she's been choked, also holding her infant.
The cops immediately handcuff her H, who we hadn't seen until he came out of the house when the cops showed up. She's crying and is hysterical saying he tried to choke her while she's holding her baby (18 months old).
I had her come stand by me (at this point DH and I are standing by our car parked along the street) and the cops ask me to hold her baby. Her tweenage daughter comes to hang out by me while they interview the lady. We waited for about 30 minutes to support the lady and keep the kids away from their very pissed-off and handcuffed dad.
OMG. It was like something out of COPS.
And then, just a few minutes ago (about 3 hours after the incident) she texts DH and apologizes. She also says that now her H will be in jail for 30 days and she needs the car sold because that will be their only income - essentially guilt-tripping DH. Yikes.
The timing would make me think husband doesn't want car sold and there might be consequences if it's gone when he gets out of jail. And if he was just arrested, how does she know already he'll be in jail for 30 days? No trial?

I was thinking that she told him that she told OP's husband about first gear and he flipped.
Wow....and now I've got the theme form COPS running through my head....
Bad boys. Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?
Don't buy the car. Stay far far away from this situation. I hope the family gets the help they need, but buying their car isn't going to provide them with that help.

Yeah, I wouldn't buy the car. I feel bad for her, but... no.
As far as the 30 days thing, some places have an automatic jail time clause if you're arrested for dv. I wonder if this is the case. Or, he could have violated parole, etc.

This is what I'm thinking - or maybe he has done this before and bail is set to high for them to make bond, so she's throwing 30 days out there.
I'm sorry you had to go through this. Thank Goodness you were not hurt. Sounds like the guy is a nutcase, perhaps he didn't want to sell the car? I feel so bad for this woman and her kids. It sounds like this is not the first time because of her reaction. So sad.

This. The whole thing sounds crazycakes, like there should have been somebody popping out with hidden cameras.
Don't buy it! Have him text her ASAP and she he is not interested so that she can re-list it if she wants. If it's a good looking car surely someone else will buy it.
I probably wouldn't buy the car, either. She'll be able to unload it on somebody--especially given how quick your H was willing to jump on it--but I wouldn't want any ties to that guy, at all.

This is exactly what the lady told me. When we were standing there in between the cops interviewing her she came to check on her kids (that I was holding) and she said he freaked out on her because she was honest with us about the problem the car had.
We're def not buying it. But DH is pretty shaken up about this whole thing. He's never had to deal with anything like this and is upset that he saw (heard) a woman get physically abused by her H.
