At work the main office secretary asked a coworker if I was expecting and she was told "yes". Well the secretary and I live in the same town and in the same round-about area. She passed on word to me that if I was looking for an in-home daycare she has this friend she's known for 40 years that takes infants - 2 yr olds, AND lives less than a mile from my house! I could walk to her house, actually. Funny, how I was stressing about childcare and haven't started asking yet, and this info falls into my lap!
So I call this woman as soon as school ends and would't you know, she's booked. She actually had an opening and someone came in last week and signed up for it. But she gave me the numbers of two other ladies who are also in the same area that I could try, but they are only taking kids Mon - Thurs. Not ideal but whatever, I'll see what I can do.
So I thank her, hang up, and start to leave for home.
My cellphone rings and I see her number.
So I think: 1) she butt dialed me 2) she remembered the name of another person I could try 3) LONG SHOT - one of her mothers walked in and said "I'm taking my kid out this January" (yeah right, wouldn't THAT be nice?)
GUESS what the call was? Yep, situation #3. Just as she got off the phone with me one of her moms said that since her oldest was starting in a nursery school she would rather her infant be there also for ease of drop off/pick up. And she plans to pull the kid in January. I'll need childcare the 3rd week of January.
So H and I have a meeting with her on the 28th to see if we like her and if we do, I'm totally putting down a deposit! She charges $45/day cash and her hours are PERFECT for my work schedule. (around here, that is AWESOME for a rate!)
OMG - this is too perfect. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop....

"$45/ day cash" seems weird. Does she try to do this without paying taxes? Just something to think about if you guys are planning on taking the child care tax deduction.

The tax deduction thing is the only downside now.
At least everything else sounds awesome! Good luck!

Paying cash won't prevent us from claiming it but I would have to list the name of my provider. I'll have to ask if she's working under the table or does claim income.
I just found out more today. I know many places, even in-home care, want you to stay enrolled even over the summer to keep your place. I just found out that she takes the summer off to travel!
That is great b/c I teach so we were really banking on not having to pay for almost 3 months of the year.
