We are building and I need to get window coverings for the whole house before we move in. I was thinking about 2" faux wood blinds, installed by home depot. Then I'd add curtains as I found ones I like.
Should I consider other options? Are faux wood blinds outdated? Any other things to consider? I suck at decorating.
We just bought white faux wood blinds for over half the windows in our house, I am in love with them! Another poster on here actually suggested them for us and it was an option I hadn't even considered before.
Here's proof that you're talking craziness: my first thought was, "uhhh, what the heck is she talking about?" Faux wood blinds are totally ok.
And MHO: unless you are completely and totally inept, try, just try, to install them yourself before paying someone to do it. It takes a while to figure out the first time you do it, but after that I promise it's 5 minutes per window.

Try www.blindster.com - great prices. I did not order wood blinds from them, but the quality of the roman shades we got was just as good as much higher-priced ones (Smith and Noble, specifically). I did recommend them to a friend and they got the faux wood ones and were very happy. Lowest prices I have seen by far.
We got 2 1/2" faux wood blinds we we bought our house last year, and we have over 30 windows! Crazy! We got several estimates and went with budget blinds. They weren't intially the least expensive but they more than price matched the lower estimate. We did blinds for most windows and plantation shutters for 2 triple windows.
We have 2" white faux wood blinds in our bedroom and I love them. We got them at HD and they have some that are already certain lengths, some that you can cut (they have a machine there to cut them), and some that people have cut to the wrong length so they are cheap.
If you own a drill you can do it yourself, the instructions are simple.
I've installed the 2" white faux blinds from Home Depot myself. I even removed some of the blinds from my last apartment to install them again in our house. It's easy peasy. I did most of them in about two hours while my H took a nap.
We have 2" faux wood blinds on all of our windows, though we'll be having plantation shutters installed in our dining room when I feel like dealing with it (front windows of the house).
We went with faux wood based on my dad's recommendation. He's a builder and said for the price difference for wood, our preference for white blinds, the amount of direct sun our house gets, and the length of some of our windows, faux would be best to avoid warping and yellowing.
There's nothing wrong with faux wood blinds, at all. I had several sales people tell me it's better to go with faux over real wood, anyway. We tried to piecemeal it and do a little bit at a time until my FIL stripped the dry wall out of one of my windows and I nearly exploded. (We'd owned the newly built house for oh, 2 days at the time!)
I drove to Lowe's, talked to a lady in the window treatment department and had blinds installed on every window of my house within 5 days. I think it was an extra $100 or so for them to install them. Money well spent, IMO!
