Baby Blue made her appearance on Monday night, about 20 hours after my water broke. I posted on here about my water breaking at about 2am and we headed to the hospital at 3am. I wasn't having any regular contractions, so they put us in a room and gave me 12 hours to see if I would contract on my own. We tried to get some sleep and then in the morning went for a walk and had lunch and everything. At 2pm, they check me and I haven't dilated any more than the fingertip from the night before, so I get antibiotics and an insert that is supposed to help the dilation process. It took a little while for the medicine to start working, but by 4pm I was having regular painful contractions and had started vomiting. I was checked at 5 and only dilated a centimeter more, so they wanted me to take a hot shower and then go for a walk and get checked again in 1.5 hours.
I took the shower and it was the only thing that helped. My contractions were right on top of each other and very painful and I was extremely discouraged by my lack of progress throughout the day. After my shower, I told H that there was no way I was walking anywhere and to go get the midwife, even though it hadn't been 1.5 hours. I was so sure that I hadn't progressed at all. She checked and I was at a 4 which meant I could move to the delivery room and get an epidural, even though I hadn't originally wanted one. I waited a couple more minutes and headed to the delivery room to get the epidural. The contractions were really really painful and I vomited again. It turns out that I was already in transition and in the 30 minutes from when she checked me in the early labor room and when I was checked after my epidural, I progressed from 4-9 cm. The epidural worked immediately on my left side, but not on the right,so I kept feeling those contractions. They doubled up the meds, which did numb the right side finally but also completely deadened my left! lol I couldn't move left leg at all anymore.
At this point, they could already see her hair coming out but they had me wait until the dr was out of a c-section for me to push (the dr wasn't doing the delivery, they just wanted him available in case of any problems). Then they gave the go-ahead and Baby Blue was born after 7 minutes of pushing. I have a couple of stitches and one nice bruise, but the recovery has been fine. It took several hours before I could be trusted to walk with my left leg, but other than that, it has been pretty smooth!
Breastfeeding at the hospital was just fine, but last night was rough. She latches really well, but the lack of sleep and being in constant demand left me feeling like I'd been run over by a train this morning!
Congratulations! Going from 4 to 9 is crazy fast progression -- no wonder you were puking from the pain! Welcome to the world, baby girl. Hope your recovery goes well.
