I have never wished so hard that a news story like this turn out to be mere bullshit political propaganda more than I have in this very moment.
Please let this not be true. I feel sick.
I read it on reddit last night and it was flagged as "potentially untrue" and then it was picked up by major news outlets today. It just wouldn't surprise me coming from that region.

I'm shocked that Russia doubled-down like this. I don't think our 2014 world, containing Israel, will allow a repeat of 1935. BUT, who knows? fryjack2 isn't wrong, ethic cleansing is happening elsewhere right now.
CNN is now reporting "Diplomats from Russia, Ukraine, the U.S. and the EU issued a statement calling for illegal armed groups to be disarmed and for seized buildings to be returned to their owners." I hope this will help stop the mess that is going on in eastern Ukraine...

When I read that earlier today I wanted to throw up. Now I'm reading that the head of the government there who supposedly wrote the flier is saying that it's not true or sanctioned by him, so I guess it was a hoax? Or propaganda by the opposing parties? Who knows. Still, this raises a lot of concerns about anti-semitism in a really volatile area.
Omg. Omg. No no no. devotchka is your family safe?
Thanks of thinking of me, honey. Luckily my family is nowhere near Donetsk... we are all really disturbed about what's going on but hopefully the chaos won't spread :/
I've been following this particular story and it's not entirely clear what is actually going on but needless to say, it is highly disturbing. From everything I am reading, it seems like both sides are denying that this is provocation or propaganda out to make the separatists look like assholes (ETA Oops - I said separatists but I should have said Russian troops. This is pretty much what's happening: aco.nato.int/saceur2013/blog/who-are-the-men-behind-the-masks.aspx), which is what it is looking like. It's disgusting either way.
But yeah... Ukraine does have a long and dark history of anti-semitism. There were pogroms in Ukraine (mass genocide by Ukranians of Jews) "back in the day" and there have been anti-semitic nationalist groups on the rise there in the last few decades... (not to mention what happened to Jews during Soviet times) so I wouldn't be surprised if this was real. Once again, let's just blame it all on the jews, it definitely solved some problems last time there was unrest/chaos in the region, right?
This is one of the big reasons that my family left Ukraine in the first place (that and obviously better opportunity here!) My Mom and Grandma had to change their last names to "get respect" and get hired. No one would give Jews jobs for a long time... and my family had to deal with a lot of anti-semitism for years in other areas of their lives. Not sure how much has changed considering that my father who has a PhD in physics is working at a kosher dairy restaurant making cheese over there :/
