We close on our new house in 5 weeks. The previous owners like colors (purple and orange room, teal bedroom and lime green kitchen...). NMS at all. I'm thinking of what to do for the kitchen. I want something neutral so that I can change the feel of the room with accessories. I don't know (yet) the color of the living room but I think if I just carried that into the kitchen it would be too light. I was thinking of going 1 shade darker and painting the kitchen that and 2 shades darker for the little columns that separate the rooms (except I would leave the tops of the columns white like they are currently). Would that look ok? Or should I not draw attention to those little column things?

I think the columns would look more purposeful if they stood out. I would probably treat them like trim and paint them white.
Your wall paint sounds similar to what I did. I wanted to keep my new house neutral, too. So I did most of it in alighter color (Ben Moore Revere Pewter), then added in a deeper color (Ben Moore Ashley Gray) to make some areas more comfortable and warm.
