I like the concept, but I don't like that the parents are boozing it up right there. Seems like it'd be easy for the kids to steal drinks from distracted parents.

I have mixed feelings but don't get a strong "WTF, this is terrible!!!!" vibe either.
The event is only held once a month. I think the age range is a bit young, but kids are unfortunately a lot more mature than we were at 6. I think excessive drinking by the parents is cringe worthy, but I'm sure the parents who are getting toasted have done so in the presence of their children before (like at a wedding, birthday party, or other social event).

A friend of mine used to DJ for something similar for a younger age range. Baby Loves Disco, I think? Glow sticks, bubbles, fancy lighting rig, etc. I think the idea is really fun. I'm a little disappointed by the amount of boozing going on in the article, and I'm usually a decent drinker at kids' events.
When you think of it, most kids love music and love to dance, but the schools won't do any kind of dance until they're much older. I think it could be fun, but there's a fine line of appropriateness.

I agree, but there's something about the nature of this kind of thing that encourages the kids to sneak drinks; moreso than at a wedding or bday party. Probably because I'm imagining the kids significantly outnumber the parents. And that age range is rife with encouraging bad behavior in others.

Sounds like my classroom, minus the drinking and the juice.
We have movement time every 45 min or so- appropriate lyrics, usually freeze dance. Nothing wrong with dancing, but making it a parallel to "clubbing" gives it a bad start for kids.

Eh, I like the concept of it. The full open bar thing is obviously not great if these parents can't control themselves and are getting plastered. Otherwise, I think that kids would like the social aspect and being able to get out and dance in a different environment with their families.
Everyone else has mostly said what i was thinking. The concept is fine, kids would love to be jumping and dancing around, but the parents getting hammered makes me raise an eyebrow. I hope none of them are driving their children home (I know it's in NY, and many take cabs, but there have to be some there that drove the kids in their cars?).
We've been to Baby Loves Disco and had a great time.
I can't get worked up over this, although I do think the booze but could be left out for the kids' party. Just wait to drink it up till the club is back to 21+.

NOBODY who lives in Manhattan would drive their kids home. Driving from the Upper East Side to the Meatpacking District is pure silliness. "Many" don't take cabs. "All" do (well, unless they're taking the subway or a car service). So I wouldn't worry about that.
This sounds fun, and involves being active, so I don't see the huge deal. And let's be honest -- if these parents who are drinking at the club were hanging out at someone's apartment, they'd be drinking.

We had something like this when I was in middle school, except less fancy. One a month there was a party for 6-8th graders at our city civic center. People from all over the city came and it was the most exciting, glamorous, and grown-up thing ever to my 11 year old self.
I think the big difference though is that our parents LEFT us there. So if they were using it as an opportunity to get drunk they were doing it out of sight.
There was also a line dancing bar that had teen nights on Fridays. It was pretty much exactly the same as any other night, they just didn't serve booze. This was also very popular and looking back quite tame.

We used to have disco nights at the roller skating rink when I was in elementary/middle school. I kind of very vaguely remember parents drinking there, at least beer. They would do all the lights and play dance music, we used to have a blast. Although I do think a skating rink is more wholesome and family-friendly than a night club.

Are parent required to stay?
We had something similarish when I was in high school- the town I lived in had teen night at one of the city buildings. I'm not sure what the age cut off was- but I remember being in 9th grade and a girl I didn't like (lol) and was a year younger was there the one time ones slowed to go. so maybe middle/high school.. I don't remember.... Parents were not required to stay- looking back, this was a recipe for disaster.
Eta: I think the age range is kind of broad. 6-12? So first graders & 7th graders? Mmmno.
So, it's basically the roller rink of my childhood. That was awesome.
This was the first thing I thought of, too. It makes me happy that my childhood roller rink is still open!
And like someone else mentioned, dancing a good type of exercise and fun.
However, the idea of VIP bottle service is pretty hilarious. The only thing that really bothers me would be the atmosphere. Are the parents just snobs with a bunch of entitled kids? Is this a place where pretty much only well off families attend or is everyone welcome?
So, great concept, but not sure about the execution for this specific place.
ETA: I just watched a video. Looks like harmless fun. But the way the article was written makes it seem so scandalous, haha.
