Has anyone has this as an adult? My kids had it and now I do too and I'm so miserable. I was misdiagnosed with strep throat since my first symptoms were sore throat and high fever with chills but now my feet and hands are covered in red bumps that are extremely painful. I'm pretty sure there's nothing I can do besides wait it out since it's a virus. Just wondering if anyone else has had it as an adult and can give me an idea of what I'm in for and how long it typically lasts. Sore throat and fever started Wednesday. Hopefully I'm almost over it, I'm not sure how much longer I can take it!
Oh I am so sorry! DH caught it from DS last year (somehow I avoided) we actually didn't know DS had it until DH found his own blisters. DH's was pretty severe although I don't remember his throat hurting much. It was mostly blisters on his hands and feet. And hopefully you don't get it so severe, but where he had blisters, he ended up losing chunks of skin. His hands were the worst and he couldn't touch anything that was remotely warm for a long time. And he lost several toenails in the months since he had it. Most of what I've read was much less severe and DS literally had like 2 blisters and a few dots. It was so weird how it manifests different in adults. Nothing really you can do though except ibuprofen and Tylenol. DH went and asked for some prescription anti itch cream but that didn't help. He was pretty much worthless for about 5 days.
I got it from DS a couple years ago. I was off work a week, but I was okay the last couple of days. I just still looked like hell (sores on my face and hands). I had to sleep with ice packs on my hands for about two or three nights because they were so sore and itchy I couldn't stand it.
Advil and ice worked for me. I didn't have mouth sores, but you can look up "magic mouthwash" if you do.
It is the WORST thing about motherhood I've been through, and I'm counting the third degree tear from birth.
My throat is probably the worst. The lesions are huge. I can see why the doctor misdiagnosed me, it looks like strep to me. I started with a high (103) fever and chills and the lesions on my hands and feet are multiplying and they hurt so bad. They don't itch they burn, almost like they are on fire. Ice is the only thing helping.
A week sounds horrible, I'm not sure how much longer I can take it.
Oh no!! I'm so sorry you got it. DS had HF&M 2 weeks ago and it was terrible for him. I came out unscathed, but my friend who's daughter also caught it got sick and she was in bad shape. From what I've read it hits adults harder than kids. I think for my friend it lasted about 5 days. :-(

My story sounds the same! DX with strep and next day the spots appeared.
I was out of work for one week, but felt better after ~4 days. The fever was the worst and sore throat.
Magic mouthwash is a RX. Lidocaine, maalox (to coat) and benedryl. Tastes nasty, but works. If you can't gargle it, dab it directly onto sores with a q tip.
The first time DS1 had it, I caught it less than a week later. It sucked. I remember feeling run down and by morning I had a fever. My throat didn't start to hurt until after the fever started going down the next day. By that evening I noticed the blisters - it was like dozens of canker sore popped up out of nowhere in my mouth and throat. I couldn't eat but I forced myself to drink water and it hurt like a bitch. The severe pain lasted for about 24 hours. I sprayed cholorseptic, sucked on cholorseptic lozenges and took Advil for relief. Didn't go to the doctor for an rx - I figured if they didn't give DS anything, why should they give me anything. After that time I was able to eat non-acidic foods. It took 3-4 days for my blisters to disappear but i could eat so it was manageable.
