My baby didn't end up having an infection though they treated her as if she did because my water was broken for 3+ weeks. So I'm not sure if this will help or not.
She was on antibiotics and IVs. My guess is your little guy will get antibiotics until they see sufficient results. He will likely get his blood taken daily. If they determine he does have an infection and needs antibiotics for an extended period of time, they may need to put in a picc line.
Use the time he's in the nursery to get some extra rest.
Please reach out to me if you need to talk or have more questions.
Eta: I have a friend whose baby had bacterial meningitis when she was born. She was in the NICU for 3 weeks.
Congrats on your little boy! I hope things settle down and that the two of you can go home soon. I don't know anything about infections, but maybe it'll just be some extra nursery time and antibiotics.
Hey Bricco, congratulations!! My first son had a bacterial infection and spent a week in the NICU. Stressful as it was, he was just fine. Good luck and enjoy the baby snuggles!
I think my DD had this or something like it at birth. My water has been broken a long time when she came out and she came out blue...although those two things prly are not related, I was never sure which one landed her on the antibiotics, just that it was precautionary for elevated something or other. Anyway she was on for 48 hrs and is perfectly fine today.
Congrats on the baby. I *think* simpsongal might be able to answer your question, if I'm remembering correctly.
Yup - thanks for tagging! bricco my LO had the exact condition.
My water broke and I had a slight fever when I delivered J' (8-9 hours of labor). They pushed an antibiotic before I delivered but not enough got in his system. Although he had an apgar score of 9, J's breathing was a little fast and shallow so he went to the NICU about 3 hours after delivery. DH went with him. It was a little scary. According to DH there were lots of docs looking over him, sticking him, taking levels. His CRP was over 7 (I think below 1 is normal). He was on 2 different antibiotics.
At first we were told he would be in the NICU 3 days. Of course, I was discharged after 2 days. His numbers didn't improve enough though so he needed a full week. I started pumping a few hours after delivery and I pumped every 3 hours (wrenching and squeezing to get every ML of colostrum out). I rented the hospital pump for that week in the NICU. J got a good amount of colostrum from me but they also supplemented w/formula (very common in this situation). They gave him a pacifier too.
I tried BFing him around day 3, we got the hang of it by the time he went home. I had enough pumped milk for him by day 3, so no more formula (yay!).
Feel free to PM me or post questions here. Good luck! Learn from the NICU nurses! Be diligent about the pump and your milk should come in fine. We made our time at the NICU like a job; we'd be there from about 8am until 5-6pm.
One more thing - J seemed fine. He was 41 weeks, a healthy big baby. He was a little sleepy from the antibiotics and sickness, but being sleepy is common for a newborn. It made BFing a little tricky though (use that cold wipe to wake him up
Typically they will need a week of antibiotics. They will also want to keep an eye on his oxygen levels. If you are planning to breastfeed you will want to start pumping.
Awesome news!!! Enjoy your day of no visitors. Seriously! DS was so overstimulated after his first day of visitors that we didn't have any on the second day. He, DH and I just relaxed in our room and worked on BFing, etc. It was awesome. Enjoy your day Fingers crossed on him feeling 100% tomorrow!
