I'd like to get a nice backpack that we can carry instead of the diaper bag when we are travelling. I would think lots of pocket and organization would be helpful. Any recs?
Check out the Tumi website. I have considered ditching my Gucci work bag (over the shoulder) for a Tumi backpack. Backpacks are so much more comfortable when you are hauling a lot of stuff! Tumis are very durable and well designed.
I am going to second the Tumi. I found mine at Tuesday Morning at a discount. It, along with my Victornox roller bag are my go to pieces when I travel and both have been all over the world.
There is a padded sleeve for my laptop, internal zippered pockets where I stash jewelry and a few smaller outside pockets to be ale to grab things quickly. The only thing it does not have is a pace for my water bottle. I can live without hat.

I love my North Face Overhaul 40 backpack. I don't know how it would do as a diaper bag (though I imagine I will be finding out in about 7 months), but it's been on more than 50 business trips, to Hawaii, and to Peru (including the Incan trail).

I used this backpack for travel and work for years, and then we started using it as a diaper bag when we had kids. It's held up so well. It still looks as good as new, and holds everything we need.
If you're looking for something cheaper than Tumi, I've had this one (well, very similar - looks like they have changed a few small things) for 7 or 8 years, and have used it for many long international trips and as a weekend bag. I also use it as my carry-on for plane trips:
It has held up beautifully in spite of some significant abuse, and has a ton of useful pockets. I also like some of the safety features, particularly the option to clip the zippers closed - very useful when using it as a daypack in crowded tourist spots.
I use an Eddie Bauer backpack. No clue if it's something that would work well for a diaper bag, but it's useful for me as a work travel bag. Reasonably priced, and a lifetime guarantee.
