I just got off the phone with one of my friends. We've both been baking for Easter today.
She was fussing about having to wash the bowl from her stand mixer because she's making vanilla and chocolate buttercream frosting. I told her that if I'm making two flavors of the same frosting, I don't wash the bowl between them- I just make sure I do the vanilla before the other flavor. She said that was strange.
So, Lazy or normal?
Poll for app users: Would you wash the bowl between two flavors of frosting? Yes No Sometimes SS
If I were her, I would make vanilla frosting, then chocolate. I would have to wash the bowl if I did it the other way around. Likewise, if I were making vanilla and strawberry, I wouldn't wash the bowl in between, but if I flipped them then I would have to wash the bowl. You just make the more neutral flavor first.
In that situation I wouldn't wash the bowl. But if I was making two distinct flavors like coconut and strawberry I would.
Yes. This makes sense. I would also do that. But as long as it's just vanilla and chocolate and I make the vanilla first, I have no issues making chocolate later.
It depends on the frosting. If I needed to cook the egg whites prior to completing the frosting, then I'd wash the bowl in between the two batches. If I was just using the bowl for mixing, then I'd skip the washing as long as the first flavor wouldn't conflict with the second.
Lol if I'm only making one batch of cupcakes, I just take half the vanilla out and then add chocolate to the rest. But I need more cupcakes than that for Easter.
Inevitably, if I just make one or the other people are upset. It's less stressful to make both.

I don't think it's weird or gross to reuse the bowl, but I don't really understand why it's such a BIG DEAL to wash the bowl. I mean. It probably takes two minutes, tops.

I don't know. If I'm making two flavors of buttercream, I'm probably also making peanut butter frosting (where you have to wash the bowl) and a couple of flavors of cupcakes, and at least one batch of cookies and probably another dessert. The fewer times I have to wash bowls, the happier I am.
But I usually either bake everything or almost nothing. There isn't much in between for me.

Buttercream. I make a big batch of vanilla then split it out to add flavors (Christmas cookies thumbprints have 4 different flavors). I just mix in the extracts and food coloring in smaller bowls and add chocolate to what's left in the stand mixer.

If people are upset that you only made one flavor of cupcake for them, they do not deserve a clean bowl next time around.

I think I've gotten used to my miniature cottage kitchen where I absolutely have to wash everything as I go or else it gets out of hand very quickly.
