Hi all. I'm mostly a lurker, but wanted to know what others thought of this. (For reference, I have had two normal pregnancies, and have used the same OB office the whole time.)
Last Thursday, we went in for our first prenatal appt. Baby looked good with a HB, measuring 7w1d. Got a pap, etc. everything's great. On Saturday evening, I started having some bleeding and cramping and proceeded to freak the eff out. Called the OB on call, she says it could be m/c, could be normal. If it kept up and didn't get worse, to come in on Monday.
It continues but doesn't get worse, so I go in Monday afternoon. The ultrasound machine doesn't have any availability, but they have a little portable one that they check with. Baby still has a HB, so they say come back next week for an US, but that the bleeding is probably normal. That evening, the bleeding gets more red (it had been brown), but doesn't increase in amount. I called yesterday (twice) and they said if I wasn't going through a pad an hour, just to hold out and wait until next week to come in.
Guys, I'm freaking out. NOTHING like this has happened either of my other pregnancies, and I want them to do a real us now to see if there's something major wrong. I asked, and they said just to wait. DH is pissed that they wouldn't ease my worries and have me come in. What do you think I should do? Call and demand one? Go to the ER? I just don't know if I can deal with this amount of bleeding for another week without knowing WTF is going on.
***UPDATE*** Well, I went to the ER tonight because I just couldn't take it. Unfortunately, baby no longer had a HB. Thank you for your advise and good stories. I will be changing OBs as soon as this is all over.

I would be pissed being left in the dark so long. If you can get some sort of u/s via another route I'd pursue it. You don't need extra stress. It could be normal, and I hope you find out it is.
I'm pissed for you too. I'm sorry. I had bleeding at 6 and 10 weeks before they found a bleed on my placenta (forget the technical name). I was on pelvic rest for a while but all was fine. It's pretty common. Good luck.

If I were having bright red bleeding and my OB wouldn't see me, I would be in the ER. I hope it's nothing, but I wouldn't want the stress. The only thing they can really do is monitor it, and try to see if they can tell where the bleeding is coming from, but I would want to be monitored!
I bled my whole first pregnancy. There is no reason to go to the er, there is nothing they can do for you anyway. Just don't hav sex or lift anything heavy and wait it out. It sucks. I had placenta previa which caused my bleeding. Eventually I got a Doppler for home use for the piece of mind
My dd is 4 now. Hugs. I know how stressful this is.

Maybe I am reading it wrong, but that sounds pretty normal to me. It sound like you had a quick u/s with a heartbeat on Monday (so two days ago) so I would expect a week's wait before checking again. Bringing you in for week apart u/s doesn't seem breezy to me and unfortunately they could do an u/s everyday and still not be able to tell you what was going to happen. It's just a really rough situation to go through and I'm so sorry you are in limbo. Good luck.
I wanted to add that I had a SCH and bleed from 9 wks - 13 wks and spotted till week 16. But the OB was able to identify the issue via a normal u/s as soon as the spotting started. The only restrictions I has was no sex or exercise.
I am angry for you though because using the sup par u/s device is just not good enough. They need to squeeze you in and ease your mind.
Thanks, for at least helping me feel a little less crazy. I do know there's nothing they can do if it a m/c. I guess I'd just like to know if it's not one, and if not, where the bleeding is coming from, you know?
They should get you in asap. Any time I had a concern with my pregnancy I was immediately scheduled for an appointment that same day. That being said I did have spotting at 8 weeks and I was fine.

I would call back first thing in the morning. If they can't fit you in, make them send you to get an ultrasound at an outside facility. It's ridiculous they've made you wait this long, I world switch doctors.

When I had a bleeding issue at 6 weeks my OB told me to call anytime I was freaked out and wanted a quick u/s. It would have driven me crazy to have to wait a week if I was bleeding the whole time.
With my first pregnancy I had a sub chorionic hematoma and a bleed in my vaginal wall that ended up having to be quarterized. This was all between weeks 7-11. I would call tomorrow and ask for an ultrasound.
I'm sorry this is happening to you. I had period like bleeding through the first trimester of my third pregnancy (first was no bleeding: full term term baby, second was a missed mc at 13w with no bleeding). I went in for weekly ultrasounds and I remember feeling so stressed and panicked because if I was going to miscarry I just wanted it to be over with. It was absolute torture.
If peace of mind is that important to you then you can ways go to the ER but they may not have the answers you're looking for such as the causes either. As long as the bleeding isn't a critical amount that could be dangerous to your health i'd try my hardest to trust your doctors plan. As pp have already mentioned nothing can be done if a miscarriage is going to happen.
They never found a reason for the bleeding I had and my son was born healthy at 38 weeks. Good luck!

Same here, both last pregnancy and this one. This time around my OB was able to pinpoint that it was likely caused by a cervical polyp, so when I had some more spotting around 17 weeks, I didn't freak out as much. I still called my OB though and he still saw me the same day just to make sure.
While there isn't anything they can do if it is a m/c, there are things they can do to make sure you are comfortable as a patient, such as being responsive to your concerns.

I learned the hard way that insurance company's aren't big fans of covering things just for the patients comfort. My insurance company rejected covering all of my serial hcgs levels in the beginning because they weren't part of routine prenatal care under my HMO. Each draw was $200 and I had about 5 done. Same with one of my ultrasounds. My peace of mind in hindsight wasn't worth my oop expenses.
