We're going to Italy in a few weeks and on the way there we have a 6 hour layover in Munich. We were thinking of taking the train from the airport into the city to have lunch and just walk around a little. We're never been there, will this be easy enough to do?
Also, I'd love any recommendations for an area to go to/train stop to get off at if you have any.

The airport is about 40-50 minutes away to Marienplatz, depending on what S bahn (S1 or S8) you take. Marienplatz is a good place to go for the short time you have. You can town hall there and there is a nice market called the Viktualienmarkt. If you have extra time and it's a nice day, I'd go to the English Gardens. You can also get some beer there at the Chinese tower.
For restaurants (I assume you want German food?), I like der Pschorr (right in the area of the Market), Andechser am Dom (always crowded), and Hax'nbauer (if you like pork knuckles or want to try them, this place is great, the rest of the food not so much). I also like the zum Dürnbräu for food, but I don't care for their beer selection so much. I love Weisses Brauhaus's beer, but their food is just OK. If you like lungs and tongues, then this is the place to eat them. I don't, lol.
I'd probably just stick to Marienplatz and lunch and then head back to the airport. Are you arriving on a weekday or weekend? The SBahn is under construction on the weekends until the end of June or July (I forget which) and it will add on extra time to your journey into the city center.
Hope that helps!
ETA: A lot of people will tell you Hofbrauhaus, and that's a good place, too. It's kind of touristy, but it's great and you kind of have to go. I just wanted to give you more options for food in case you want a less touristy experience.

klingklang77 Thank you! I honestly have no idea what we are looking for other than German food We haven't really planned this. We'll be there on a Tuesday so hopefully not too bad time-wise on the train.
My favorite place to eat was inside of Englischer Garten, but not at the places by the pond. They didn't have English menus and the food is very Bavarian, but it was really tasty. I, especially, loved the spätzle.
If you also like gummies then there's a great place called Bears & Friends that have some interesting flavors like prosecco. There are a few locations: www.bears-friends.de/

HoneySpider --do you mind posting about how this works out for you when you get back? We have 5.5 hours in Munich in a few months and I was wondering if we could hop out and do something quickly too. Thanks & have a great trip! (hopefully that tag works)

We ended up skipping the trip out due to flight changes, our 9 hour stopover dropped to 4 hours. Ended up at the Air Brau in the airport as the Hofbrau in the airport didn't open until the time we needed to be at our gate. It was ok, not great.

HoneySpider bumping to find out how the layover in Munich went. Did you leave the airport/where did you go/work out okay or too stressful?
Thanks!
Hey thanks for reminding me!
I don't have much to share since we ended up not leaving the airport. By the time we got off the plane and then we went to the Lufthansa service counter about our next flight, we had less time than we originally thought. DH was a little nervous about the time so we decided to just stay. It was pretty boring hanging out in the airport but not the end of the world
