I love Kauai! I'm sorry you didn't have the best hotel experience - I'd be a bit put off by the staff as well. I've been fortunate enough to stay at some really nice hotels in the past and one of the main differences I noticed was how attentive the staff was all day long. Any time I walked by a staff member they did a great job at acting genuinely friendly.
I enjoyed the hike and bike ride too. Such a beautiful island!

Thanks for sharing! We're leaving for Kauai and Maui in 2 weeks and I'm always way too excited. We're going to whole Kalalau Trail. I'm a little nervous but I'm sure it will be worth it.

Are you doing the 8 mile round trip to the waterfall or going beyond that and camping?
The hike to the beach area is pretty moderate, the hike to the waterfall you have to go over a lot of stream crossings jumping on rocks. That portion is a little harder but SO worth it!

Have a great trip!
We're doing the whole thing and camping at the end! We did the hike to the waterfall the last time we were there. I agree - so worth it. We saw the rest of the trail from our boat tour of the coast and knew we'd have to come back to tackle the whole thing one day.
I'm curious as to why you returned to the St. Regis when you did not have a good experience the last time around. I'm glad to hear that things were better on your recent trip, of course.

Good question there are 2 reasons
1. Because we wanted to go back to Kauai and there really isn't anything else on the island that would come close to passing for a 5 star property, so for us it's really the only option if we want to do Kauai and stay somewhere we are comfortable.
2. The hotel offered to comp us a night after the first stay went so badly if we came back. We weren't planning on going, but decided to go with friends of ours this past January so we took them up on their offer and booked our stay.

Good luck! You are going to have a great experience with that hike!
