Nothing because I live in earthquake country and I can't put anything above the crib without constantly freaking out about it. I do like the idea of some cute pictures or a painted mural or something.
My friend has an etsy shop and custom painted a triptych to match our bedding. Those are canvas paintings, so even if they fell they wouldn't hurt the baby.

You could do a wall decal with LO's name or some other design. There's tons of etsy and nothing could fall.
Excuse the bad lighting--this is what we just put up. The thing on the left is a card my parents were given when I was born, and the one on the right is a Picasso that my mom saved and just gave me at my baby shower. The thing in the middle is from Land of Nod and I just like it. (No one else seems to besides me haha). I figure we will reassess after the baby is old enough to go in the crib and take stuff down if it seems dangerous.
A wall decal that is a map of the world and his name( we have a world/travel theme going). I'm not a fan of wall decals but it was the easiest and safest option.
Our first idea was to use stencil but besides trying to find a stencil that size and the time, we went with the wall decal. Plus I like that we can just take it down instead of repainting.
I am putting a large picture frame up with his initials inside of it. I plan to wrap the letters in twine. In June I will work on decorating the nursery.
