My bf and I want to drive down to DC for a couple of days in July or August to go to museums etc. Is midweek the least crowded? Any tips would be appreciated.
I would imagine midweek would be less crowded than weekends (and some attractions like the Bureau of Printing and Engraving and the Supreme Court are only open on weekends).
BUT -- and this is a big but -- DC is a hot, humid mess in July and August. Would September be a possibility? The weather will be nicer and crowds will dwindle because kids will be back in school.
Summer is fine, the museums are all air conditioned and just wear something sleeveless. Definitely recommend mid-week but all summer is crowded with kids out of school.
I probably wouldn't do as much walking around the Mall due to the heat as I would other times a year. But then you'll cool down in a restaurant after so it will be fine.
Yes, midweek is better. Do not go on or around the 4th of July. It's insane.
I understand if you can't change your travel plans. In that case, wear very cool clothing, and be open to using the bikeshare, metro, cabs, tour buses, etc. instead of trying to walk everywhere. As others mentioned, DC is unbearably hot and, more importantly, humid in the summer.
I have found that midweeks can be good, especially if you are going sometime in the summer when you do not have to worry about fieldtrips or something of the sort. I have been able to get around most of the sights fairly quickly without having to stand in line or wait for much.
