Clara Emmanuelle was born at 5:16 this morning. She weighs 6 lb 8 oz and is 20 inches long. She looks just like her daddy! So far she's a champion nurser - latched right on. We are in love! Thanks for all the well wishes last night! I labored for about 25 hours and it was intense but nothing impossible. ------------ I thought I posted this earlier but apparently it didn't post. Here's an update: We were about to be discharged from the birthing center about 6 hours after her birth when the nurse said her oxygen saturation levels were low and she was breathing too fast. So we drove her over to the NICU next door with the nurse riding along. She stopped breathing in her carseat and it was really scary! She was turning blue by the time the nurses had her in the bassinet in the NICU but fortunately she recovered quickly with some oxygen. We still don't know quite why she was having trouble. Perhaps just a little retained fluid on her lungs. But she's doing well with oxygen and her labs and X-rays came back clear. So we will be staying overnight in the NICU until at least tomorrow, to wean her off oxygen before we head home. I'm currently holding her and nursing her in her room and just loving being a mom!
UPDATE: She's doing pretty well but further blood culture results showed she has a bacterial infection. We should know more specifics tomorrow after the culture grows for 24 more hrs. She's going to have to be on antibiotics for the next 10-21 days which means we will be in the hospital for that long. We really wish we could be home, obviously. It's hard to recover postpartum when you aren't a patient in the hospital and you're just hanging out in the NICU room. But she's in good hands so I'm glad we are here.
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.
If you have one of those car seat head supports, make sure it isn't actually pushing her head down (think chin-to-chest). That can close off her airway. Sometimes I recommend to not use those head supports until baby gets a little bigger and stronger.
