How long did you use the infant carrier? DS2 is 20lbs at 4 months and it's getting so hard to carry him in that thing. It's starting to hurt my wrist when I lift it out of the car. I want to use it as long as I can so I will suck it up. I'm just wondering how long others used it.
I don't have a big baby (but for some reason felt compelled to respond), but we switched totthe convertible when he was about 15 lbs. It was starting to feel heavy dragging him out, he was sleeping less, so less imperative to avoid disturbing him when we went places, etc. He's also super tall, so by that point he looked more comfortable in the bigger seat.

I never carried him around in the carrier, too heavy! He aged out of it at about 5 months size wise. But I always either had the stroller frame for it or transferred him to a Moby/Ergo.
ds is 22 pounds and 5 months old. we still use it but don't carry him around in it anymore except to/from the car & house, into church, or other places where we quickly carry him in and set the bucket down. we almost always take it out of the car and snap it to the stroller or set it in a shopping cart next to the car. i have also started taking ds out of the seat and wearing him.

Nods want huge, but she was pretty heavy. I used the bucket seat until over a year. When she got older I Tenafly left it in the car, but even though it was heavy, it was nice to get her contained and bring stuff out to the car. I also loved it when we got home late and she fell asleep in the car. It was easier to carry the car seat into her bedroom then transfer her into bed then to unbuckle her from the convertable and try to carry her up the stairs with out waking her.
I think it was 6mo with DS1 and 5 mo with DS2. Luckily, it was summer time when they both moved out of the infant carrier and they were both sitting up on their own prior.
For DS2, I always had either my Ergo or the stroller ready to put him into as I also had a very active toddler ready to take off at any moment
We still use the seat in the car, but never take it out. I quit taking it out around 5-6 months. You don't need to break your back to use it as a car seat.
Bbot stopped looking comfy in it at about 4 months, so we switched then. He was always super sweaty in it, too. I probably could have used it longer, but I didn't drive enough to care about the easy transport factor.

I stopped with #1 when she was 4 months old, with #2 when she was 6 months. That's when each exceeded one of the minimums (my kids are older, so my seat had lower height/weight limits than the ones available today). And #2 only lasted that long b/c I only took the carrier into the house and restaurants (and usually DH was there to carry her for the latter). When I went shopping, she went in the stroller or more often in the Bjorn b/c she wasn't happy unless I was wearing her.

DD switched to a convertible at 6 1/2 mo and DS switched at 4 1/2 months. They both only wanted to sit up and it was too heavy to carry around so that feature was pointless after a few months. Car rides got soooo much better after they switched too!
J is about 22 lbs and 8 mos; we switched two weeks ago. I held out until he could sit reliably so that we didn't need it for restaurants or the grocery store. We could have switched earlier and just worn him out and about; we don't get out a ton with all four of us as it is right now since I've been back to work.
Both my boys were 16 lbs by 2 months. By the time they hit 5 months they were over 20 lbs. I had both in convertible seats by 6 months. I didn't like carrying the heavy carrier around, and the babies seemed much more comfortable in the convertible seat.
My DS is 18.5 lb at 4 months, and I think I'm going to switch him as soon as he can sit up in a shopping cart. I do still stick the infant seat in the cart when I am shopping and don't want to give that up yet (he doesn't love the Ergo, so it's a gamble that he might scream through the store). I switched DD at 9 months, and I think she was around 20-21 lbs. at that age.
We're still using it as a carseat but that's it. I have a convertible seat that I need to install in my car but was planning on holding off until we got one for J's car. Now I'm about to install it in my car and J can just use the infant seat as a carseat for a little bit longer.
We stopped carrying DD out of the car at around 4-5 months. We continued to use her car seat until she outgrew it at around 13 months. No need to waste good months of car seat usage.

A just hit 18 lbs. (not sure if that qualifies as big, but our seat is not a light one). I am lazy as fark and from the beginning almost I refuse to carry it. I will snap it onto the stroller just to get him in and out of the house. I also just put the harness/headrest onto the tallest setting today so in a few months when he gets to that 1" because of his long torso I have to put him in a convertible anyhow.
