Our last round of air travel is coming up next week. I'll be 29 weeks then.
I thought that would be it until the baby arrives, but am now scheming to get in one last trip to Philly when I am about 35 weeks. I have a bunch of friends there who want to celebrate the end of the school year in late June by taking our kids to a bunch of places like the Please Touch Museum and the Franklin Institute together. It's about 1.5 hour by train from here (no way I would feel comfy driving that late in my pregnancy). Not too crazy, right?

I honestly dunno that you'll be in the mood. That sounds like a lot of walking and standing and not much places to rest for a while. If it was just traveling to go sit somewhere I'd say maybe but traveling to go walk/stand around sounds bad for 35 weeks, imo.

Hmmm, I guess I will play it by ear, but I have to entertain my child for a week between school ending and summer camp beginning anyway. Seems like it would be easier to do so with friends around to help than just taking her by myself to the Natural History Museum & etc. here.
I hope my doctor is OK with it, but I'm planning to go to a wedding a 4-hour drive away at 33.5 weeks. I would not feel comfortable flying after 30 weeks, and my last planned flight is at 28/29 weeks.
I'd play it by ear. Since a train trip doesn't really require advance ticket purchases (although Amtrak does jack up the prices last minute), maybe see how you feel around 33 weeks and take things from there? I wouldn't commit to it now. I had a glorious second trimester/early third trimester and at 28 or so weeks, I proposed a 4-hour train trip/weekend getaway to my H for when I was 35 weeks. I'm 36 weeks now and I realize I dodged a bullet -- big time. Any chance your friends could come to your city?
I travel for work (driving) so I'm *hoping* to continue that to 36 weeks or so. I don't have any flights scheduled past 25 weeks, but that may change. It's a 50 minute flight to our main office.
Sitting on a train with DD and then sleeping at a friend's house for a couple of nights sounds much more pleasant than hosting 2 or 3 friends at my place for a couple of days with all of their kids in tow. But I guess we could scale our ambitions down to a day trip if necessary.
Personally I would go but I would drive myself bc I hate the idea of not having control over my commute at that point in pregnancy. That way if your not feeling great you can leave whenever you want.

Maybe this is an East Coast thing (where the traffic generally sucks), but I am much more confident that a train would get me home/to my hospital more quickly than a car would, if necessary. And I could always jump in a cab to get to the train station in Philly on that end.

I get what your saying. I'm from NYC (now living in the South) and loathe Penn station so I guess that's why!
I'd do it. Worst case scenario, there are a ton of hospitals in Philly, and there are trains probably every hour, if not more frequently.
That said, we're going to our annual beach vacation 1.5ish hrs from home when I am 38 weeks. A) There's a hospital just off the island, less than 10 minutes from our house and B) There are about 8 hospitals between OCNJ and where we live, and C) we won't be more than 2 hours (maybe 2.5 with the absolute worst traffic) from the hospital where I'll deliver. My doctor has already ok-ed it, barring any complications between now and then.

I'm supposed to give a presentation at a conference 2000 miles from home when I'm right about 32 weeks, which I understand is kind of pushing it. I really hope I am able to go.
I am flying (domestically, 1.5 hour flight) at 33 weeks. That's the latest my doctor said to fly. I can't remember what he said about travel on the ground.
That being said, I would personally have zero concern about traveling from NYC to Philly at 35 weeks. Worst case scenario, you need a hospital, and there are certainly plenty of those in Philly.

I would not want to drive myself and my child from Philly to NYC if I were having pregnancy complications.

I meant if it ended up just being too much being tired etc liking the idea of leaving whenever. Obviously if your having serious complications I wouldn't be jumping in the car I'd be getting to the hospital!
The last trip I have scheduled right now is at 29 weeks. I haven't even talked to my doctor about that one yet (I'm only 12 weeks right now), but I figured that would still be an okay time frame.
1.5 hours away doesn't sound too bad, but I would probably consult my doctor to see what she thought.
If you feel up to it, I don't see any reason not to go. If it turns out to be too much for you guys, you can slow down the plans or pack up and go home. If you happen to have any medical issues, I'm sure there are plenty of reliable facilities nearby.

I was all ready to say no when I saw 35 weeks, but then I saw it was just 1.5 hours by train. That doesn't seem bad at all assuming you are physically up to it.
We live 45 minutes from our hospital and I traveled over an hour the other direction (so 2 hours from the hospital) when I was 37 weeks. And that was just to meet up with some people for dinner. I figured in a true emergency I would just go to the nearest hospital. Not ideal but not likely either.

1.5 hours by train seems like nothing to me. Some people do that every day just to get to work.
Part of the problem with flying is supposed to be the low air pressure sometimes inducing labor, so I'd think taking the train would be way less of a concern.

I'd do it, w/o worry.
I'm toying with going to NYC (via train, 3.5 hours) at 36w if I get cleared. It's probably nuts, but my husbands company throws this amazing picnic and I want to go!

I did this with DD. I live in CA and presented in GA at 33 weeks. My doctor ok'd it saying -essentially - there are hospitals in GA if anything goes wrong. And even with a 5 hour flight, there would be plenty of time to land and get to a hospital if something went wrong. I wore compression hose (as I was doing anyway) and stood up in the back of the plane as much as I could.
I guess it's living in the bay area, but I often drove for 1.5 hours to get to appointments until I was about 36 weeks. So I'd take a nice train ride at 35 weeks. At least you can get up and move around!

Yeah, the only part I'm worried about is if any complications develop, which might mean my midwife wouldn't want me to travel. If it was for fun and my choice on the schedule, I wouldn't choose for it to be so late in my pregnancy, but I'd be traveling with DH, and most likely also with a bunch of other coworkers, including a family practice MD, NP, and an OB. Not quite like traveling with my own midwife or being near a hospital, and I'd rather not ever develop such a close relationship as that with our Chief Medical Officer or other coworkers, but even in the worst scenario, I'd certainly be in very good hands.
